Lubuto Library Project: Bringing Knowledge and Enlightenment to Africa's Street Children

Lubuto Library Project

The Lubuto Library Project is creating quality libraries to serve Africa's most vulnerable children. The goal is to give the burgeoning numbers of vulnerable children the opportunity for non-formal education, improving literacy, language skills, general knowledge and participation in society. At a Lubuto Library, children can read for themselves, look at books or have books read to them, helping them to explore the world and their human heritage.

Construction is nearly complete on the first Lubuto Library, in Lusaka, Zambia. The Lubuto Library Project plans to build 100 libraries across Africa over the next 10 years. Each will house a first-rate collection of 5,000 primarily non-fiction, sturdy books adhering to careful guidelines (attached) established by expert children’s librarians. The collections will be assembled and classified by US student volunteers in community service work; local-language books will be added to the collections in Africa.
