Fatherhood Initiatives: Connecting Fathers to Their Children

Carmen Solomon-Fears, Specialist in Social Policy - Congressional Research Service

This paper from the US Congressional Research Service provides an overview of fatherhood initiatives in the United States and includes brief evaluations of five of these initiatives. Fatherhood initiatives encourage responsible parenting and fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives, whether or not fathers live with their children. Fatherhood initiatives often also include media campaigns designed to “emphasize the importance of emotional, physical, psychological, and financial connections of fathers to their children.” Most fatherhood programs include: parenting education, mediation services, peer support, conflict resolution training and skill-building, job training opportunities, and more. The paper also reviews issues related to fatherhood initiatives.
