Report of the Expert Group Meeting on "Family Policy Development: Achievements and Challenges”

Expert Group Meeting, United Nations, Department for Economic and Social Affairs

The United Nations, Department for Economic and Social Affairs, Division for Social Policy and Development released the Final Report of the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on "Family Policy Development: Achievements and Challenges” which was produced after the 14-15 May 2015 EGM. The meeting focused on changing families, family law reforms, violence in the family and their impact on family policy development.

The EGM issued many recommendations in its Final Report, including the following: in addition to structural, normative and institutional changes to prohibit violence in the family, strategies are needed to change prevailing norms and attitudes that allow violence to take place within families and communities; the need to develop policies and educational strategies to promote safe, nurturing families that provide emotional support and stability for children and strengthen nonmarital families, including helping young adults to make decisions about family formation and transition to parenthood; and recognising the need for economic justice to be available to the primary caregiver of children following the breakdown of non-marital relationships.
