Gujarat: The Indian baby who was abducted twice

BBC News

"A two-day old baby born to daily wage workers in India's western state of Gujarat was kidnapped not once but twice," says this article from BBC News which investigates how and why. According to the article, the baby's mother was approached by a woman claiming to be a nurse at the hospital where she had given birth, saying that the baby needed to be vaccinated. The woman took the baby and did not return. "The woman said she had delivered a stillborn baby, and was afraid that her husband would leave her if she went home without a son. Police say her story is not uncommon."

Two months later, the baby was taken again. Police tracked down the man who took the baby the second time, who claimed that he and his wife, who have since been arrested, kidnapped the baby because they did not have a child of their own.
