Abstract
Background
The effect of different types of care environment on orphaned and separated children and adolescents’ (OSCA) experiences of abuse in sub-Saharan Africa is uncertain.
Objective
Our two primary objectives were 1) to compare recent child abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) between OSCA living in institutional environments and those in family-based care; and 2) to understand how recent child abuse among street-connected children and youth compared to these other vulnerable youth populations.
Participants and setting
This project followed a cohort of OSCA…
Abstract
Background
Preventing child maltreatment is a global mission of numerous international organizations, with parent support programs as the critical prevention strategy. In Kenya, 70 % of children are at risk of experiencing abuse and neglect, most often by their parents. Yet, there is a lack of evidence-based parent support programs, and a limited understanding of Kenya’s capacity and infrastructures (e.g., policies, funding, service agencies) to support and sustain such programs.
Objective
The purpose of this study was to assess systematically Kenya’s strengths and…
Executive Summary
Kenya has made important progress towards tackling violence against children. Global, regional and national level commitments have been made to address violence against children, as evidenced by the laws, policies, guidelines, strategies and multi-sector programmes and initiatives implemented following the development of the Response Plan to Violence Against Children (2013–2018).

This report presents findings from the Kenya 2019 Violence Against Children Survey (VACS). This survey is the second nationally representative survey conducted in Kenya on violence against children and youth, following the first VACS in 2010. The survey measures the prevalence, nature, and consequences of physical, emotional, and sexual violence against children and youth. The survey enhances the country’s capacity to design, implement, and evaluate violence prevention programmes and build successful child protection systems. The VACS results include several notable findings that provide…

Abstract
Children's exposure to poly-victimization, which is the experience of multiple types of victimization, has been found to be associated with negative health outcomes and risk behaviors. We examined the collective effects of childhood sexual, physical, and emotional violence on selected self-reported health outcomes among young Kenyan females and males using the Violence Against Children Survey (VACS). Overall, 76.2% of females and 79.8% of males were victims of sexual, physical, or emotional violence prior to age 18, and one-third (32.9% and 34.5%, respectively) experienced two or…
This report is the product of a two-year investigation by Disability Rights International (DRI) into institutions and orphanages across Kenya. DRI visited twenty one children’s institutions – both public and private – in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi and rural and coastal communities. There were approximately 3,400 children in the facilities investigated by DRI.
The report describes the "egregious human rights violations" perpetrated against children with disabilities in Kenya, particularly those who are confined to institutions and "orphanages."
"The situation in institutions for…

These Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been developed based on current, evidence-based practices to facilitate joint action by all health actors to effectively respond to child sexual violence.
