INTRODUCTION
For children to thrive they must have their needs met in multiple domains and across the life-course; yet, millions of children under the age of five will not meet their developmental potential. Part of the reason for this is due to the burden of HIV coupled with the high prevalence rate of common mental disorders in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this paper we review published literature on the mental health status of mothers living with HIV (MLH) and how this affects their children; we outline the pathways between maternal HIV,…
In The Adolescent Brain: A second window of opportunity, a new compendium publication produced by UNICEF Innocenti, eight experts in adolescent neuroscience present emerging findings from their research. Using accessible language, the main aim of the publication is to foster better collaboration between the scientific research community and social service providers to better counteract the effects of trauma and vulnerabilities and lay a better foundation for optimal adolescent development. The State of the Ugandan Child: An Analytical Overview focuses on four thematic areas, namely: health and nutrition, education, child protection and child participation; with emphasis placed on the girl child. This leaflet is a mapping of Save the children’s role and work in promoting the engagement of fathers. It presents some of the evidence of the benefits of involving fathers and some of the strategies used by the organization and others. Among the benefits highlighted:

The European Commission adopted in February 2013 an important Recommendation (2013/112/EU) on Investing in Children, stressing the importance of early intervention and preventative approaches. Adopted together with its new Social Investment Package (SIP), it makes quality childcare one of its key policy areas to break the cycle of disadvantage in early years and reduce the risk of child poverty and social exclusion. Of particular note, the recommendation addresses the importance of children's care directly…
Children’s experiences of poverty and vulnerability are multidimensional and differ from those of adults. Children undergo complex physical, psychological and intellectual development as they grow, and are also often more vulnerable to mal-nutrition, disease, abuse and exploitation than adults. Their dependency on adults to support and protect them means that loss of family care is a significant risk, particularly in the context of conflict, humanitarian crises, and HIV and AIDS. Intra-household discrimination can also result in child poverty and hunger, lack of access to ser-vices, and abuse…
UNICEF’s Executive Board adopted the UNICEF Child Protection Strategy at its annual June session. The strategy outlines the contributions of UNICEF to national and international efforts to fulfil children’s right to protection and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, within the context of the UNICEF medium-term strategic plan (MTSP) for 2006-2009. A shift is underway towards understanding child protection as strengthening systemic and societal support for protective laws, policies and social conventions. Specifically, UNICEF’s focus has shifted from a project-centered approach to a…
