Globally, during the COVID-19 pandemic there have been disruptions to initiatives, services, and programmes that promote and protect nurturing care for young children. While necessary to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2, strategies such as complete or partial lockdown, physical distancing measures, and school and childcare closures, have made it increasingly difficult to reach children and caregivers. At the same time, the social and economic ramifications of the pandemic have put families in even greater need of parenting and family support. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, many…
Abstract
In Kenya, millions of children have limited access to nurturing care. With the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is anticipated that vulnerable children will bear the biggest brunt of the direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic. This review aimed to deepen understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on nurturing care from conception to four years of age, a period where the care of children is often delivered through caregivers or other informal platforms. The review has drawn upon the empirical evidence from previous pandemics and epidemics, and anecdotal and…
Executive Summary
Zambia’s HIV prevalence is currently estimated at 11.1% among adults aged 15–49 years and 1.1% among children aged <15 years20. The Zambia National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council estimates that 10% of Zambia’s population (over 1.3 million children under age 18 years) are at high risk of being orphaned or vulnerable due to the impact of the HIV epidemic. Since the epidemic began, an estimated 250,000 children and adolescents have already been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. The Zambia Family (ZAMFAM) project’s aim is to improve the care and resilience of…
ABSTRACT
The extent of the vulnerability of orphans and vulnerable children in Zimbabwe has been on the increase. To investigate the challenges faced in addressing the needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Marondera, focus group discussions and interviews were utilised. They also indicated the need for proper alignment of policy development and implementation, as well…
Background: Although Tanzania experiences a general decline in HIV prevalence, some populations such as caregivers of orphans may be at a higher risk than the general population, suggesting that infection pathways still need further exploration. This study examines how food insufficiency relates to HIV infection among caregivers of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Tanzania.
Data and Methods: Data are from a community-based, USAID-funded Kizazi Kipya project that aims at increasing the uptake of HIV services, as well as other health and social services by OVC and their caregivers in…
Abstract
Background
HIV status disclosure facilitates receipt of HIV prevention and treatment services. This study assesses the magnitude of, and factors associated with undisclosed HIV status to a community-based HIV prevention program among caregivers of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Tanzania.
Methods
Data are from the USAID-funded Kizazi Kipya project that seeks to increase uptake of HIV, health, and social services by…
This report from Child's i Foundation provides an overview of the organisation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda. Child's i Foundation is taking steps to ensure that families do not have to make the "heartbreaking choice" of placing their child in an orphanage and is also working to ensure that the needs of children in orphanages are being addressed.
These steps include:
- Responding to child protection issues
- Maintaining contact with orphanages and advocating government to ensure that children in institutional care are prioritised
- Keeping…
With COVID-19 causing widespread restrictions on movement in 2020, schools around the world were forced to close, risking major disruption to children's education. This Practitioner Guidance Paper shares the different approaches taken by three Family for Every Child Members to mitigate this disruption: moving to online learning for unaccompanied minors with METAdrasi in Greece; using the radio to provide far-reaching lessons with FOST in Zimbabwe; and engaging parents in their children's education using a socially-distanced homework collection system with CAP Liberia.

Abstract
In Mozambique, more than a million children are living with HIV or are otherwise vulnerable due to HIV. In response to this crisis, the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funds programs that serve orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV and their families. These programs retain case workers, known as activistas, who provide and refer beneficiaries to services to increase beneficiaries’ knowledge of their HIV status and to improve retention in care among those living with HIV. To improve program effectiveness, implementing organizations need to…
