Ten percent of children worldwide live in households without a biological parent, and 5.4 million children live in residential care institutions. This study describes a participatory, child-informed process of developing a multidimensional measure of child subjective well-being tailored towards the priorities of children who have lived in residential care.
Eight focus groups were held with n = 49 adolescents reunified with family after living in residential care in Kenya and Guatemala and six focus groups were held with n = 29 young adults who had lived in residential care…
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted unprecedented reverse migration, forcing millions of migrants to return to their countries of origin. Due to loss of employment and income, fear of getting infected with COVID-19 or a desire to be with their families during the pandemic, many migrants - including youth migrants from East Africa who were living in the Gulf and who are the focus of this chapter - returned or were repatriated to their countries.
This chapter is part of the "Research Handbook on Migration, Gender, and COVID-19" and explores the gender and youth dimensions of return from GCC…
Case management is the process of identifying, assessing, planning, referring, and tracking referrals, and monitoring the delivery of services in a timely, context-sensitive, individualized, and client-centered manner. Case management is used within child welfare and protection programming, and has been shown to improve decision-making and service delivery, to enhance child and family outcomes.
Changing the Way We CareSM (CTWWC) recognizes the importance of using case management as the preferred approach when supporting children to reintegrate from residential care to…
Abstract:
This paper explores the rarely examined experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors in Nairobi, Kenya. Children are thought to comprise up to a third of Nairobi’s refugee population, however, there is virtually no data on them.
The paper provides a first analysis of a unique dataset to ascertain unaccompanied minor refugees’ experiences of physical, emotional, resource related, and sexual violence. The authors' research findings indicate widespread violence among refugee children living in Nairobi, and denote the prevalence of several kinds of violence in particular.…

Alternative care refers to non-traditional family-based or residential care for children when they are deprived of parental care. It is estimated that between 3.2 and 9.4 million children reside in institutional-type residential care settings globally. Most commonly, children enter residential care due to a combination of factors that may include natural disaster, poverty, abuse, neglect, or risks to safety. Introduction to residential care is also associated with low household income, lack of access to basic services (e.g., education), disability, and/or parental challenges. …
This case study details the experience of Attim, a 54-year-old grandmother from Eastern Uganda who provides care for her grandchildren after they left residential care. Social workers in Uganda often find that placement with extended family members is the most appropriate option for children leaving residential care.
This case also details that the successful reintegration from residential to kinship care requires preparing families well so that they have realistic expectations around the challenges that they may face.

Climate change is impacting lives and livelihoods across the African continent, through increasing temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, particularly droughts and floods.
This snapshot produced by Mixed Migration Center examines environmental drivers of international mobility and their interactions with other migration drivers in East and the Horn of Africa. The aim is to provide national and regional policy actors with some empirical data on the links between climate change and international mobility, to inform…
The migration of parents is believed to be for the sake of children and families left behind. However, its impact on children left behind has been overlooked in Southern Wollo, Ethioipia. The impact of parental migration on the education and behavioral outcomes of children left behind has to be investigated in the migration-prone area. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of the migration of parent(s) on the education and behavioral outcomes of children left behind. A total of 622 children of migrating parents and children living with both parents were selected for this study…
This short paper examines why children on the move need to be included in care reform3 in the region, how the care needs of these boys and girls can be met, and what lessons can be learned from the care of children on the move to inform the care of children more broadly.
It is aimed primarily at UNICEF country office, government, and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff working to improve the care of children.
