Abstract:
This paper explores the rarely examined experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors in Nairobi, Kenya. Children are thought to comprise up to a third of Nairobi’s refugee population, however, there is virtually no data on them.
The paper provides a first analysis of a unique dataset to ascertain unaccompanied minor refugees’ experiences of physical, emotional, resource related, and sexual violence. The authors' research findings indicate widespread violence among refugee children living in Nairobi, and denote the prevalence of several kinds of violence in particular.…
The Transform Africa Alliance, with representation from Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Madagascar and Mozambique, calls upon the Sudanese Government, humanitarian actors and the international community to work together to map out the whereabouts and needs of all children living in institutions across Sudan and provide them with vital humanitarian assistance. Appropriate response measures should be deployed to prioritise the safety, security, and health of children in orphanages and other institutional care…
Climate change is impacting lives and livelihoods across the African continent, through increasing temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, particularly droughts and floods.
This snapshot produced by Mixed Migration Center examines environmental drivers of international mobility and their interactions with other migration drivers in East and the Horn of Africa. The aim is to provide national and regional policy actors with some empirical data on the links between climate change and international mobility, to inform…
This short paper examines why children on the move need to be included in care reform3 in the region, how the care needs of these boys and girls can be met, and what lessons can be learned from the care of children on the move to inform the care of children more broadly.
It is aimed primarily at UNICEF country office, government, and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff working to improve the care of children.
In 2018-2020, Lumos worked with partners across four refugee camps in Tigray, Ethiopia. The goal was to reverse the trend of placing unaccompanied children into institutions, bringing in a system that put family-based care first.
Lumos set up processes for recruiting, screening and training potential foster carers, then supporting them – financially, practically and emotionally – once children were placed with them.
Out of the project came these active principles that they hope can be applied to care transformation in other refugee settings:
- Make family-based care the…
This is a video recording from the webinar: Constructing the foundations for legal identity in post conflict situations. Abstract
Despite mounting evidence of the need for people to have trusted and trustworthy identity credentials, little attention has been paid to the key determinants of an identity management system that establishes a person’s unique legal identity and issues reliable official identity credentials. Also overlooked is a country’s ability to register and give legal identity to everyone who lives within its borders, regardless of citizenship status.
This paper aims to contribute to the achievement of Target 16.9 under Sustainable Development Goal 16 by analyzing the role of the civil…

Save the Children conducted research in three refugee camps in Dadaab in Kenya which explored the impact of COVID-19 on children’s education, young mothers’ livelihoods and gender-based violence. This study highlights programmatic adaptations made in response to COVID-19, identifying what has worked well or less well and considers practical recommendations for the sector. The research gathered views from children, young mothers, caregivers and key stakeholders working in child protection and education in the camp. This study found that:
