With rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, increasing biodiversity loss, and prolonged droughts, climate change is already affecting ecosystems in the Eastern and Southern Africa region and the communities that depend on them. For example, recent droughts in the Horn of Africa are widely attributed to climate change, with such extreme weather events likely to become more common as global temperatures rise. Many areas of Kenya have experienced unprecedented drought, with five consecutive below-average rains.

Kinship care involves children who cannot be cared for by parents being looked after by relatives or friends of the family. In Zimbabwe, around a quarter of all children are estimated to be in kinship care. Regional and global guidance state that kinship care should always be explored as the first option when children are separated from parents. It can offer a safe and caring environment, where children speak their own languages and follow their own traditions. However, without support, kinship care families often face challenges, especially as most kinship carers are elderly grandmothers…

Introduction
In 2014, the Government of Kenya developed comprehensive guidelines on the alternative family care of children. The guidance reflects the global Guidelines for the alternative care of children, welcomed by the United Nations in 2009. This guidance outlines a continuum of care whereby maximum efforts are made to keep children within their own families, and where this is not possible, place them in family-based alternative care.
In 2018, the Government of Kenya decided to pilot the implementation of key components of this guidance at the county level.…
Case management is the process of identifying, assessing, planning, referring, and tracking referrals, and monitoring the delivery of services in a timely, context-sensitive, individualized, and client-centered manner. Case management is used within child welfare and protection programming, and has been shown to improve decision-making and service delivery, to enhance child and family outcomes.

As an example, in its fourth year of implementation, Changing the Way We Care created two opportunities to promote learning and influence the practice of organizations and donors engaged in child protection and care in two demonstration countries: Kenya and Guatemala.
These opportunities provide useful insight into the unique opportunity to influence and promote learning amongst key stakeholders. The design applied to each of the contexts was different and resulted in unique successes and lessons learned. As CTWWC is a learning initiative, reflection and learning after the events was an…
This case study documents the journey of Okot, one of many children in the Kakuma camp in Kenya, living with relatives. There are over 8,000 unaccompanied and separated children living in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei camps, the majority of whom are in kinship care (children cared for by relatives or friends of the family). These children are assessed and provided with case management support where necessary. Children in kingship care are also supported through regular follow-up visits from child protection volunteers and village child protection committees.

Effective and sustainable reintegration requires a solid conceptual framework and an appropriate and standardized case management approach. Kenya was lacking a comprehensive, participatory, and standardized package that included guidance, standard operating procedures, tools and training on what and how to conduct case management to ensure the wellbeing and eventual family placement of children without parental care. This gap often resulted in programming practice of varying quality and inadequate resources committed to reintegration of children into families.
To ensure a significant…
