In this case study, Coordinating Comprehensive Care of Children (4Children) documents and evaluates the work of Pact's Yekokeb Berhan Program for Highly Vulnerable Children (HVC) in Ethiopia. The case study is one of three case studies developed by 4Children at the request of the Office of HIV and AIDS at USAID to share and promote learning from OVC programs which have implemented successful interventions to increase HIV testing and services (HTS) for children.
This case study includes a background on Ethiopia and the context of its health and social welfare services,…
Objectives of the case study
The overall objective of the case study is to highlight and help promote good practice related to case management within orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) programming. The case study illustrates the core components of a case management system (see Figure 1), the positive results of a case management system, and some of the challenges in developing, implementing, and solidifying a case management system within an OVC program. The information presented should be understood as just one example of a case management system in practice. Any case management system…
Abstract:
Adolescents (ages 10-19) and youth (ages 15-24) bear a disproportionate share of the HIV burden, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about what projects are doing to make their interventions adolescent- and youth-friendly and which interventions are effective for changing HIV-related outcomes in this age group. Program managers and policymakers have little evidence derived from rigorous studies on how best to invest resources to achieve 90-90-90 targets among adolescents/young people. In recognition of this evidence, gap, MEASURE Evaluation…

This presentation was delivered at the Africa-Wide Children Without Appropriate Care Program Learning Event: “Shaping our care reform work across Africa,” held in Ethiopia on 20-23 April 2015. It provides an overview of the Tracking Progress Initiative, which includes the development of a tool to measure country progress in implementing the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children.
This video features a segment of a talk on the effects of care environments on children, hosted by the Christian Alliance for Orphans. The key speakers featured include Dr. Kathryn Whetten & Dr. Charles Nelson, who discuss the Positive Outcomes for Orphans study (POFO) and the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP), respectively.
Dr. Nelson speaks about the institutionalization of children and its impact on the brain development of institutionalized children. Many children in institutions, says Dr. Nelson, experience isolation, a lack of response to distress, a…

Permanency for Children: The Development of the BCS Global Foster-to-Adopt Pilot Project in Ethiopia
This report provides initial documentation of a pilot program launched by Bethany Christian Services in 2009 in Ethiopia. An estimated 5 million Ethiopian children (0-17) were identified as having lost one or both parents, as a result of HIV and AIDS, other diseases such as TB and malaria, extreme poverty and famine and migration (2005). This situation has left families financially stretched beyond their limits in providing the traditional model of orphan support and has resulted in increased reliance on institutional care. In order to address this situation the Bethany Christian…
