This report’s primary purpose is to recommend evidence-based strategies to improve the relevance and effectiveness of field interventions that target development outcomes for migrant girls in Southern Africa.
To do so, it draws on qualitative action research conducted in Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia in 2019. As the use of child soldiers continues to proliferate throughout the world, it is integral that effective psychosocial interventions are developed and critically evaluated. This research shows that former child soldiers who are provided rehabilitative services and accepted back into their families and communities will become productive, responsible and caring adults.

This survey highlights efforts to disarm, demobilize and reintegrate former child soldiers in Cambodia, Colombia, El Salvador, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Kosovo, analyzing them in terms of policy and legal issues, political context and program implementation. The special needs facing the former child soldiers are discussed along with political situation and child protection in each country. Conclusion, lessons learned, challenges and recommendations are presented at the end of the survey.
