This document is intended to provide concrete advice on how to put the guiding principles common to most child protection actors into practice. Though cultural traditions and customs may require the advice to be adapted to the specific context, the authors believe that the advice provided is grounded in sufficiently broad experience to guide measures that ensure children under five are not separated when this can be avoided, and, if separated, can be reunited with their families as quickly as possible.

This brief - a supplement to the Stop the War on Children 2020: Gender matters report - highlights the situation of children in conflict zones in West and Central Africa with a focus on gender. It explores how girls and boys are all increasingly affected and exposed to conflict in different ways (e.g.: recruitment into armed groups, sexual violence) and how 4 out of…
This webinar includes presentations from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Philippines, sharing experiences designing, managing and evaluating parenting interventions to reduce violence against children and adolescents by parents and caregivers. Harsh and abusive parenting in the home is one of the most common forms of violence children experience worldwide but evidence about effective interventions in low and middle-income countries is still emerging. Programmes may reduce some forms of violence, but show limited efficacy in interrupting other forms of family violence like intimate…
Abstract
Introduction Parenting programmes are increasingly popular for reducing children’s exposure to interpersonal violence in low/middle-income countries, but there is limited evidence on their effectiveness. We investigated the incremental impact of adding a caregiver component to a life skills programme for adolescent girls, assessing girls’ exposure to violence (sexual and others) and caregivers’ gender attitudes and parenting behaviours.
Methods In this two-arm, single-blinded, cluster randomised controlled trial, we recruited 869…
Abstract
Children who are separated from their families and usual caregivers in emergencies face a multitude of risks to their health and wellbeing. This study presents findings from the first known population-based estimation of separation in an emergency setting. Point prevalence and basic characteristics were measured to inform programming, policies and funding for affected populations. A household survey was carried out in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to estimate separation subsequent to an attack by the M23 militia group. Separation was tracked in terms of children arriving…
This document provides a brief summary of the field testing of the population-based estimation method (or ‘estimation method’) in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A fuller account of the field testing can be found in the longer document: Pilot Summary Report, Democratic Republic of Congo: Population-Based Estimation by the same authors. The estimation method was used to estimate the scale and basic characteristics of separation resulting from the armed group M23’s takeover of Goma in December 2012, also affecting the neighbouring territory of Nyiragongo. The pilot ran from…
This pilot summary document provides a brief summary of the field testing of the community-based surveillance method in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A fuller account of the field testing can be found in the longer document: Pilot Summary Report, Democratic Republic of Congo: Community-Based Surveillance Method by the same authors. The surveillance method was used to monitor new cases of separation in ‘real time’ across ten village sites in the territory of Nyiragongo. The pilot ran for an 11-week period from August to October 2014.
The primary objective of this document is to provide a “linking and learning forum” for member organizations of the Parenting in Africa Network (PAN). The document, which highlights best practices in parenting and family strengthening interventions, is also intended as an advocacy tool to promote skillful parenting. The document evaluates several programs and interventions throughout Africa, most of which are implemented by PAN members and which are all aimed at strengthening families for the wellbeing of children. All of the programs surveyed regard parents and caregivers as significant…
This report is an adaptation of the global State of the World’s Fathers report, which was produced by Mencare, a global campaign to promote men and boys’ involvement as equitable, non-violent caregivers. The report highlights the research and findings from the State of the World’s Fathers report that are specific to Africa. This Africa-focused report was produced by Sonke Gender Justice. The report examines and uncovers the knowledge on men’s participation in unpaid care work, sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, violence against women and children, and child…
