Summary
The importance of children being well cared for in families is widely recognised in global policies and guidance. There is extensive research demonstrating clearly the importance of a safe and caring family for child wellbeing and development. While there is consensus on the importance of effective care in families for children, there is a lack of discussion and agreement about the precise components of this care. In particular, further exploration is needed to determine which elements of effective care are universal and which are culturally or contextually specific, and to explore…
Abstract
From October 2013 to July 2016, over 156,000 children traveling without their guardians were apprehended at the US-Mexico border. Although these unaccompanied youth have received substantial media attention, little is known about their health and well-being. The current study implemented a concurrent, parallel mixed methods research design, whereby quantitative (survey) and qualitative (focus groups) data were collected simultaneously to explore: (a) the frequency of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidal ideation, and substance use, (b) trauma exposure at pre-…
This report examines what family means to children and adults in the following countries: Brazil, India, Guyana, South Africa, Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Kenya. The storytellers use evidence from 59 short films made using digital storytelling technique.
Through this technique, it was found that there are a range of family types, all with equal value in children’s lives. Many who made the films spent significant parts of their childhood living with extended family. Many spoke on the pain of separation.
The report notes that policies should not support one family type from another…
The world is facing a hidden crisis in childcare. That crisis is leaving millions of children without the support they need, with damaging consequences for their future. It is also having severe impacts on three generations of women – on mothers, grandmothers and daughters.
There is an urgent need to solve the global care crisis to improve the lives of both women and children and to grow economies. There are 671 million children under five in the world today. Given labour force participation rates that exceed 60% globally, a large number of these children…
Abstract
This article discusses the effect of international migration on the accumulation of human capital among Mexican youths aged 15–18 who are left behind. Evidence indicates the existence of a negative impact of sibling and parental migration on school attendance among young males but not on the measure of cognitive ability. Migration of extended family members has no significant effect. There is no evidence of a robust effect among females. The negative effect of sibling migration suggests that lower migration costs and differences in return to Mexican formal education between the…
The “Men Who Care” report is a five-country (Brazil, Chile, India, Mexico, and South Africa) study that explores the topic of men who are involved in non-traditional forms of care work. These men are described as engaging in care beyond what is traditional amongst their male peers, including men in primary caregiving for children or others at home but also men in paid care work professions where women predominates. The study examines how they view their own work, how they came to be engaged in it, and asks a number of questions about the perceptions around engaging in what some cultures…
Several developing economies have recently introduced conditional cash transfer programs, which provide money to poor families contingent on certain behavior, usually investments in human capital, such as sending children to school or bringing them to health centers. Evaluation results for programs launched in Colombia, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Turkey reveal successes in addressing many of the failures in delivering social assistance, such as weak poverty targeting, disincentive effects, and limited welfare impacts. Many questions remain unanswered, however, including the…
