This report from Disability Rights International documents the human rights violations, exploitation, and trafficking of children with and without disabilities in Guatemala. Guatemala has failed to create the protections and support needed to help children live with a family – especially children with disabilities. DRI is also concerned that private charities and international donors are supporting orphanages and perpetuating discrimination. International support – including “voluntourism” – leaves children open to segregation, abuse, and further exploitation by traffickers.

While many scholars and activists from multiple disciplines have reported on various aspects of orphan policy and the international adoption industry, there has been little synthesis of this information and its implications for global child protection. This chapter asserts that the misidentification of “orphans” as a category for development and humanitarian intervention has subsequently been misappropriated by many Western individuals and charitable organizations. This overview is intended to contribute to discussions on international volunteering in residential care centres as an anecdotal research piece on the situation in Guatemala. Guatemala was chosen as a focus country due to recommendations from a range of informants who raised concerns about the practice in centres in Guatemala. Availability of research and connections also contributed to the choice of Guatemala as a country focus. This overview was informed by online resources, academic and institutional literature, and interviews and email correspondence with informants. A limitation of this…

The following specific objectives were developed in order to achieve the general objective:
- To identify the number of institutions that provide care to institutionalized children and adolescents, the locations of these homes as well as their technical capacity, infrastructure and access to care resources.
- To determine the main…
Seeking Asylum Alone is a two-year comparative study documenting the circumstances and treatment of unaccompanied and separated children who cross borders in search of protection. The study was conducted in three countries—the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia—where the distinctive problems facing child asylum seekers are significant and unresolved. This report concerns the United States. Reports describing the findings in the other countries, and an overall analysis comparing policies and practices in all three countries, will be published later this year (2006).
