While some characteristics are common to most institutional settings (e.g., group rearing, non-related caregivers), the social environments of institutions are highly variable. This edition of the ISS Special Series on the Draft UN Guidelines on Alternative Care features the child protection system in Chile. The regional application of polices and national strategies for the protection of children has enabled the country to significantly reduce institutionalization of children nationally.
