The long-term consequences of COVID-19 have been tough for children around the world, but even more so for young children already in humanitarian crises, whether due to conflict, natural disasters, or economic and political upheaval. Young Children in Humanitarian and COVID-19 Crises: (2024), edited by Sweta Shah and Lucy Bassett, investigates how organizations around the world responded to these dual challenges, identifying solutions and learning opportunities to help to support young children in ongoing and future crises. Drawing on research and voices from the Global South…
Abstract
Background
COVID-19 has become a worldwide pandemic impacting child protection services (CPSs) in many countries. With quarantine and social distancing restrictions, school closures, and recreational venues suspended or providing reduced access, the social safety net for violence prevention has been disrupted significantly. Impacts include the concerns of underreporting and increased risk of child abuse and neglect, as well as challenges in operating CPSs and keeping their workforce safe.
Objective
The current discussion paper explored the impact of COVID-19 on child…
Globally, during the COVID-19 pandemic there have been disruptions to initiatives, services, and programmes that promote and protect nurturing care for young children. While necessary to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2, strategies such as complete or partial lockdown, physical distancing measures, and school and childcare closures, have made it increasingly difficult to reach children and caregivers. At the same time, the social and economic ramifications of the pandemic have put families in even greater need of parenting and family support. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, many…
This webinar heard from three of Family for Every Child's member organisations about their programmes to both integrate and reintegrate children on the move. From Uyisenga Ni Imanzi in Rwanda webinar participants heard about their programme to reintegrate street-connected children; from Taller de Vida in Colombia, attendees heard of the role of their art therapy in the reintegration of children involved in armed conflict; and from METAdrasi in Greece participants heard about their work to integrate unaccompanied minors.
Abstract
There is an urgent need to strengthen early childhood development and education in emergencies (ECDEiE) globally. Colombia has faced protracted and acute crises for decades. Also, the country has applied a unique approach to holistic and integrated ECDE policy formulation. We argue that these characteristics offer a valuable country‐case to identify barriers and levers to the operationalization of ECDEiE. We applied a sector‐wide analysis protocol that harmonized components of the Humanitarian Programme Cycle by the Inter‐Agency Standing Committee and of a framework to…

Globally, an estimated 50 million children are on the move - leaving home, their communities and sometimes their countries for work or to escape violence, conflict, poverty or discrimination. Others may be displaced and separated, or taken from families against their will for exploitation of various kinds. While children are on the move around the world for a multitude of reasons and in a wide range of contexts, their experiences tend to be characterised by a lack of care and concern for their best interests by those with whom they come into contact.
Promoting the effective integration and…
Abstract
International remittances can increase the income of recipient households, and thus reduce their budget constraints. As such, they may enhance consumption and investment opportunities for family members that remain in the country of origin. This document analyzes the impact of international remittances on child labor and school attendance for children aged between 12 and 18 in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. Using a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) strategy, we find that children in remittance-receiving households are less likely to engage in market work, but no evidence that…
All over the world, the pandemic has turned children's lives upside down. In this episode of Save the Children Documentary, they share their stories. Follow along to northern Colombia where nothing is the same in 15-year-old Mary's life, and on to the war in Afghanistan where vaccinations stopped and food shortages threaten. Hear 16-year-old Vusi in South Africa talk about how the strict lockdown made an already tough situation impossible, and how a young rapper in Delhi's slum raises hope with his songs.
This report consolidates findings from a rapid participatory consultation with: (1) migrant girls in the Northeastern Colombia border region, (2) front-line practitioners providing services to migrant children and their families, and (3) Save the Children teams in Colombia.
This report is part of a global research series on girls on the move.
