Based on field studies and in-depth interviews across rural and urban China, this book presents a socio-legal analysis of non-state organised care for some of China's most vulnerable children.
The first full-length book to examine non-state organised care of modern China's ‘lonely children’ (gu'er), this book describes the context in which abandonment occurs and the care provided to children unlikely to be adopted because of their disability. It also explores the various faith groups and humanitarian workers providing this care in private orphanages and foster homes in response to…
Abstract
Globalization has brought about cross-border socio-cultural, politico-economic and technological exchanges while instantaneous communications have allowed knowledge and culture to be shared around the world simultaneously. Thus “global law” denotes the cross-border development of legal norms that involve a transnational legal culture of a pluralistic nature. In the trend of globalization, general rules of international conventions and treaties are adopted as local laws to accelerate national development. Socio-legal research has observed that global legal rules and concepts…

This open access article explores three related phenomena: first, the abandonment and institutionalization of children with disabilities in China that increased disproportionately in the 2000s; second, the important relationships between such abandonments, culture, economics, and politics in contemporary China; and third, the relationship between such abandonments, the increasing rates at which Chinese orphans with disabilities are being adopted to Western countries through Inter-country Adoption (ICA), and the global politics of ICA and disability. Although the rise in the…

Abstract
The child protection service workforce has been constantly challenged by high turnover due to the stressful nature of the job. To address high turnover, prior research has examined a wide range of predictors of child protection workers' intent to leave. This study aimed to identify the interrelationships of risk and protective factors, job satisfaction and burnout to child protection workers' intent to leave, the relative impact between job satisfaction and burnout on intent to leave, and their mediating roles for the risk and protective factors. Analyzing survey data from 93.9%…

In order to develop the evidence base and advocate for the strengthening of national child protection systems, governments and their partners require accurate, regular and up-to-date data and information on how such systems are functioning. This publication proposes a framework of core indicators for measuring and monitoring national child protection systems in the East Asia and Pacific region. The indicators, used either in concert or selectively, will support monitoring and assessment of the enabling environment or ‘governance’ of national child protection systems. The seven domains…
Abstract
Since inception of the national child protection system in 2000, there has been significant progress in protecting children from abuse and neglect in South Korea. However, there are clearly areas that need further development to better protect the vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. The cultural context has been a challenge to the national child protection system. Changes in South Korean’s attitudes toward and awareness of child maltreatment have been slow. The basic orientation of the child protection system can be described as retributive by focusing on punishing the…
