This new study reveals that over 120,000 children in Thailand are living in institutional settings, mostly due to poverty and limited access to education. 90% have at least one living parent. Although institutional care may be appropriate in emergencies, it is often overly misused and can affect children’s emotional, cognitive and mental development. More than 50% of private “orphanages” are unregistered and unregulated.
The study lays out the extent of the problem, identifies risks, and provides…

Transnational familyhood involves care reconfiguration and shifting roles among Filipino migrants and the family left-behind. The study was aimed at gaining insights into the operations of privately run, Christian faith-based residential care facilities (RCFs) in Myanmar. Specifically, the study sought to better understand the operational mechanisms of these RCFs, including the characteristics of the directors and donors, the means and reasons for referral and admission of children into care, and how the interplay of these dynamics affect RCF stakeholders’ willingness to engage in transition, the reintegration of children, and transition outcomes.
The study employed a mixed methods approach and gathered data from…

This document is intended to provide concrete advice on how to put the guiding principles common to most child protection actors into practice. Though cultural traditions and customs may require the advice to be adapted to the specific context, the authors believe that the advice provided is grounded in sufficiently broad experience to guide measures that ensure children under five are not separated when this can be avoided, and, if separated, can be reunited with their families as quickly as possible.

Abstract
Background: Violence against children (VAC) is a widespread, global issue with far-reaching social and economic consequences. In recent years, VAC has received substantial international attention, resulting in government initiatives to reduce VAC, in part, by strengthening data collection and information systems.
Objective: This scoping review was undertaken to map survey methodologies for VAC measurement in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries and to identify key considerations for developing both…
In order to develop the evidence base and advocate for the strengthening of national child protection systems, governments and their partners require accurate, regular and up-to-date data and information on how such systems are functioning. This publication proposes a framework of core indicators for measuring and monitoring national child protection systems in the East Asia and Pacific region. The indicators, used either in concert or selectively, will support monitoring and assessment of the enabling environment or ‘governance’ of national child protection systems. The seven domains…
