Abstract
Objectives
We investigated the prevalence rates of childhood trauma, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and suicidal behaviors among Vietnamese adolescents and compared the differences between institutionalized adolescents (IAs) and noninstitutionalized adolescents (NIAs). In addition, we examined the multidimensional associations between childhood trauma and psychopathology among IAs…
The lack of accessible information is a barrier to further exploration and understanding of out-of-home care in Asia. Definitions of alternative care are unclear and in many contexts non-existent.
In light of these issues, research was undertaken to provide an overview of the social welfare landscape of 10 identified Asian countries (Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam). It covered the spectrum of care provisions including; family preservation, reunification, guardianship, kinship care, foster care, domestic and inter-…
People with disabilities have the right to live in the community, according to Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. However, more than a decade after the adoption of the CRPD by the UN and nearly global ratification, children with disabilities continue to be placed in institutions in every region of the world. Worse still, low-middle income countries that have never had systems of institutionalization have started to build them.
In 2017, the CRPD Committee adopted general comment No. 5 on Article 19 on living independently and being included in the…
ABSTRACT
Children living in residential care have a degree of separation from their parents and other family members. Based on attachment theory, this study was conducted to analyze the contact between these children and their biological parents, and the factors affecting this contact. The sample included 382 children (orphans, abandoned or helpless children, children whose parents are deprived of custody or are unable to raise a child) living in residential centers located in North, Central and South of Vietnam. Data were obtained by semi-structured interviews. The results showed that, on…
Abstract
Vietnam has a long history of diverse forms of adoption. Yet contemporary domestic adoption remains largely invisible, with families often keeping it secret. The three narratives of secret adoption examined here illuminate the complex dynamics that have naturalized the middle-class biological nuclear family as the ideal for a market economy. As women narratively perform kin-work to make such a family visible and real, they render invisible other relations of blood and desire. Enmeshed in classed, gendered and intimate dynamics of transparency and secrecy, adoptive kinship in…
Abstract
From a social work perspective, this literature review aims at guiding the development of foster care in Vietnam by discussing current research about foster care from different countries. The literature presents major differences between foster care systems in social democratic states such as Scandinavian countries and liberal welfare regimes such as Canada and the UK. Rehabilitation and family reunion is the number one priority in Sweden while the principle of permanency guides all policy-making in the UK. As a result, in the UK national adoptions are preferred which does not…
As part of phase one of the development of the Martin James Foundation's Asia Care Network, comprehensive studies of the care system in each country were conducted to highlight the need for developing alternative care systems across South-East Asia. This case study highlights relevant data from Vietnam.
According to the case study, the Vietnamese government has collaborated with multiple international charities and…
This one-page presentation outlines the research questions of a study on the effects of relatedness, age and orphan status on child discipline. The document also provides a description of the study and methodology, presents the data and the results in table and graph form, and briefly highlights a literature review conducted as part of the study. The document offers a short discussion on the results of the study and notes some of the implications of these findings.
The study looked at data from Ghana, Iraq, Vietnam, Costa Rica, and Ukraine to uncover how a child’s relationship to the head…
This presentation was given at the Alternative Care Workshop in Bangkok in November 2005. It provides an overview of the situation of children without parental care in Vietnam and the child welfare system in the country, including residential/institutional care.
The main aims of this assessment were to identify and address problems in both the domestic and intercountry adoption processes, with a view to assisting Viet Nam in its preparations to accede to the 1993 Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption (THC-93); and to review the new draft law on adoption, and propose any amendments that may appear necessary to ensure compliance with international standards and good practice. The report reviews a wide range of pertinent documentation. Furthermore, information was obtained through in-country visits and discussions with relevant actors (notably…
