The present study report is based on data collected through the National Mapping Exercise in India covering all child care institutions (CCIs)/Homes except 34 CCIs/Homes in Uttar Pradesh. These were not mapped in accordance with the request from the State Government. This data pertains to the year 2016 during which the Mapping visits were conducted. This cross sectional data might have undergone some changes after 2016. The importance of the findings provided in this report lies in the facts and indications that have been thrown up rather than the numbers being generated. The details of…

Abstract
Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are increasingly, and increasingly effectively, being used in development and humanitarian work. Whereas health and education lead this use, application to child protection remains sparse and ill-understood. This paper helps address these two gaps. On the one hand, it enhances understanding of the use of ICT in child protection, by presenting the global and south Asia-specific landscapes, focusing on notable initiatives, partnerships and tools; on the other, it hopes to guide future use by putting forth a concept for an ICT-…
The study of the Mapping Exercise of the Child Care Institutions(CCIs)/Homes throws light on a critical component of the Juvenile Justice System i.e. functioning of CCIs/Homes across the country, in the context of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and the Rules framed thereunder.
The present study report is based on data collected through the National Mapping Exercise covering all CCIs/Homes except 34 CCIs/Homes in Uttar Pradesh. These were not mapped in accordance with the request from the State Government. This data pertains to the year 2016 during which…
Abstract
This paper deals with the design and development procedures involved in child protection practices in India. To design the logical structure of the database which is the caricature of this verification system, entity relationship diagrams have been used and implemented. The development procedure uses open-source database connectivity with the sole motive of creating a verification system which is open, robust, secure, and encrypted and contains integrity as well as referential constraints. The data background search (DBS) database has been designed and developed with the primary…
Abstract
This paper brings to fore the need to compile an accurate and comprehensive database for children living in institutional care. It addresses key issues like defining institutional care, identifying the various reasons behind children coming to live in institutional care and providing estimates pertaining to the number of children living in institutional care. It further explains why it is necessary to have a definite count of the number of children living in institutional care. The main reason being that unless these children are identified, no definite plan for provision of…
This study identifies risk factors for voluntarily joining armed groups, as well as to test association of conscription status and mental health. Interviews were conducted with 258 former child soldiers who participated in a communist revolution in Nepal. All districts participated in UNICEF-sponsored reintegration programs for child soldiers. Of these child soldiers 80% joined “voluntarily.” Girls were 2.07 times more likely to join voluntarily than boys (95% CI [1.03–4.16], p = .04). Among girls, 51% reported joining voluntarily because of personal connections to people who were…
Although tools for measurement of individual child health status or household functioning in low-resource settings have greatly improved, little attention has been paid to the measurement of site-level threats to child protection. As opposed to a tool that assesses an index child or a single household, a site-based tool is helpful in understanding “interconnected domains of child protection and offers a more comprehensive, holistic assessment of the conditions facing many children in a particular setting.” Thus, this study in India sought to develop the SAFE Checklist in order to assess…
Orphanhood is a vast problem in the world with impacts on the social and public health sectors. Evidence-based information on the geographic distribution of orphans is an important information gap in Nepal. The present study aimed to identify the proportion of children who are orphans and their geographic distribution in Nepal. This study used the population subset of 0-17 year olds from the nationally representative Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2011, Nepal. The Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) method was used while fitting a logistic regression model to adjust for the…
