This study identifies risk factors for voluntarily joining armed groups, as well as to test association of conscription status and mental health. Interviews were conducted with 258 former child soldiers who participated in a communist revolution in Nepal. All districts participated in UNICEF-sponsored reintegration programs for child soldiers. Of these child soldiers 80% joined “voluntarily.” Girls were 2.07 times more likely to join voluntarily than boys (95% CI [1.03–4.16], p = .04).
