This study explores the effect of COVID-19 on a small number of privately run and funded residential care institutions by conducting a qualitative research study comprising 21 semi-structured interviews across seven focus countries. In many cases child helplines also represent an essential component of national child protection systems, bringing together a variety of actors to safeguard children in need. This paper accompanies the Global Study on Sexual Exploitation of Children in Travel and Tourism, a report from ECPAT. The paper provides an overview of international volunteering, or “voluntourism,” and its potential to create opportunities for child sexual exploitation, particularly in residential care centres.
