Context:
The aim of the Changing the Way We Care initiative in Moldova (hereafter CTWWC) is to contribute to the completion of the deinstitutionalization process of children in institutions and to strengthen families and family-like services so that children can enjoy a safe and nurturing environment. In the Republic of Moldova, the CTWWC initiative is implemented in partnership with three civil society organizations that play a key role in the implementation of child protection reform at the national level: Keystone Moldova, CCF Moldova, and Partnerships for Every Child. As part…
Over the last 20 years, much has been learned about the extent to which early-life deprivation affects the mental health of children and adolescents. This body of evidence comes predominantly from studies of children raised in institutional care.
The Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP) is the only randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate whether the transition to family-based foster care early in development can ameliorate the long-term impact of institutional deprivation on psychopathology during vulnerable developmental windows such as adolescence.
In this review, the…
Introduction
Children placed in institutional care are deprived of their fundamental right to living in a family environment. The Romanian state would greatly improve their situation, if it took care of preventing the separation of children from their family, instead of focusing on the current model - placing in care about 63,000 children, while hundreds of thousands of them still live in inhumane conditions. These are the ones that specialised public authorities pretend they do not see, because they lack the capacity for legislative framework design to prevent the separation of…
Abstract
Psychosocial deprivation is associated with the development of socially aberrant behaviors, including signs of disinhibited social engagement disorder (DSED). In longitudinal studies, signs of DSED have been shown to decrease over time, especially as children are removed from conditions of deprivation. What is less clear is whether signs of DSED in early childhood are associated with poorer functioning in early adolescence, including among children who no longer manifest signs of DSED at this age. In a sample of 136 Romanian children from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (…
Summary Emergence of mental health problems in childhood can seriously affect further development of a man and thus hamper his adaptation to adult life. Children in residential institutions may be particularly vulnerable at risk of abnormal mental development, this includes so-called ‘children’s homes’. In the article we present an overview of the few studies carried out so far in the European residential institutions, including children’s homes, over the years 1940–2011 in the UK, Germany, Romania, and Poland. Firstly, we briefly describe a classic research carried out in the world in the…
The Childonomics project has developed an instrument that can help to reflect on the long-term social and economic return of investing in children and families. The instrument provides an approach to economic modelling that can be used in a number of ways to inform decision-making. It enables consideration of the different types of costs of services and approaches that support children and families (particularly those in vulnerable situations) and links them to the expected outcomes of using these services.

Abstract
Early psychosocial deprivation has profound adverse effects on children's brain and behavioural development, including abnormalities in physical growth, intellectual function, social cognition, and emotional development. Nevertheless, the domain of emotional face processing has appeared in previous research to be relatively spared; here, we test for possible sleeper effects emerging in early adolescence. This study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the neural correlates of facial emotion processing in 12-year-old children who took part in a randomized controlled…
Abstract
The family is the institution that has suffered greatly due to migration, because the migration of one of the partners sometimes damaged the intra-family relationships severely. Children were the most affected in the family, but also their educational status, their public perception and more than that, their emotional state.
The main problem that I wanted to study was: what are the consequences of the affective and educative nature of parents’ migration related to their children in Romania.
This report summarizes the discussions and activities held at Eurochild’s 11th Annual Conference, co-hosted by Hope and Homes for Children in Bucharest, Romania on 26-28 November 2014. The event, which focused on “better public spending for better outcomes for children and families,” brought together representatives from civil society and government as well as researchers, other professionals, and young people themselves from 36 countries in Europe. The group was convened with the purpose of developing “a clear and convincing narrative to bring those people on board who still believe…
