As part of the project ‘Humanitarian Response to the Protection Needs of Migrant Girls, Boys and Teenagers on the Northern Border of Mexico’, financed by the Basque Government’s Cooperation and Development Aid Fund (FOCAD) (August 2020 to November 2022), SC Spain alongside SC Mexico have developed a series of workshops. These workshops, based on the methodology ”Parenting with tenderness” (It is a tool to strengthen the bond between fathers, mothers and sons and daughters based on love and respect) and “Parenting on the Move”, are aimed at mothers, fathers and caregivers, with the goal of…
The objective of this article is to identify those situations where the families of fostered unaccompanied migrant children are made visible in order to favor the incorporation of these families into the pathway planning. The study design is qualitative exploratory. The fieldwork was carried out in Spain and involved working groups with specialized professionals. The results show that the authorities responsible for the foster care completely ignore the families although these are present in the daily life of the unaccompanied children.
The few professionals and resources that include the…
The European Refugee and Migration Crisis went from very high numbers of daily arrivals and quick transit through the Balkans in 2015 to significantly reduced, but ongoing, arrivals and longer stays in Balkans countries in 2016 and 2017. After the EU–Turkey deal came into place in March 2016, over 18,000 children (more than 40% of all arrivals) from Afghanistan, Iraq or Syria have transited through the Balkans, making it the second most travelled migration route to Europe. Closed borders and limited legal options reinforced “irregular routes”, facilitated by smugglers and traffickers,…
Abstract: The number of unaccompanied minors (UAMs) arriving in the European Union (EU) has been increasing dramatically over recent years resulting in the formulation of EU policy directives around safeguarding and well-being. Notably, the majority of UAMs enter Europe irregularly through two main gateways to the European continent: via Italy, using the Central Mediterranean Sea route; or through Greece, transiting through the Eastern Mediterranean route from Turkey, mostly via sea. Profiles of UAMs travelling via the two different routes are significantly diverse, reflecting Italy’s and…
Abstract
Unaccompanied minors who reach the age of majority often experience this transition as a complex stage. Insecurity and helplessness may arise and, in some cases, survival without the support of the institutions and services that previously protected them as minors in the host country may mean becoming at risk for social exclusion. The objective of the present study was to characterize unaccompanied minors in Portugal (N = 67) and understand the processes of transition into the age of majority, using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative (survey) and qualitative (…
Abstract
This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork in an Italian reception centre for male ‘unaccompanied minors’. Drawing on the concepts of ‘hostipitality’ (Derrida), the Black Mediterranean, and ‘intimate citizenship’ (Plummer), we examine the political ambivalence of hospitality for young African men as they transition to adulthood and how this is experienced through the intersections of age, gender and race. The biographical transition to adulthood thus offers a unique empirical opportunity to examine the extent of hospitality, as the (uninvited) Black child guest crosses the…
This webinar heard from three of Family for Every Child's member organisations about their programmes to both integrate and reintegrate children on the move. From Uyisenga Ni Imanzi in Rwanda webinar participants heard about their programme to reintegrate street-connected children; from Taller de Vida in Colombia, attendees heard of the role of their art therapy in the reintegration of children involved in armed conflict; and from METAdrasi in Greece participants heard about their work to integrate unaccompanied minors.
Abstract
This article examines the housing and social policies for URMs in Greece. The main argument is that the social policies pursued have residual characteristics and focus on emergency housing services, a form of management that does not favor the social integration of URMs. Instead, it traps them in dismal conditions that violate the human rights. The findings of the scholarly review and the field research shed further light on another aspect of the shrinking of the welfare state which, along with the EU refugee repression policies, trap a vulnerable group in extreme forms of…

Summary
This study examines a sample of 1705 cases of unaccompanied and separated children (UASCs) included in a pilot project for early recovery child protection intervention. The project was started in two Southern Italian regions; multidisciplinary teams ensured an immediate intervention at the moment of disembarkation, working on children engagement and need assessment. Data were gathered about minors’ characteristics and services activated. Descriptive information was selected to develop a profile of cases and bivariate analysis was used to assess the…
Executive Summary
Girls on the move face a multitude of often gender-specific challenges during their migration journey and programming adjustments are needed to appropriately respond to their needs and fulfil their rights. In the data collected in this research, no evidence was found of specific migration routes in the Balkans being preferred by families travelling with girls, although it did suggest a greater level of preparation, resulting in somewhat slower mobility of families with children and of unaccompanied and separated girls. The findings confirmed the…
