The European Refugee and Migration Crisis went from very high numbers of daily arrivals and quick transit through the Balkans in 2015 to significantly reduced, but ongoing, arrivals and longer stays in Balkans countries in 2016 and 2017. This study aims to advance the understanding of children with special needs in foster care by identifying the characteristics, processes, and outcomes of their placement. The study uses a quantitative approach to identify 190 children with special needs (registered) from among 2,157 foster children in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Spain and examines key data covering 2008 to 2018. Child helplines exist in many countries around the world, offering a vital source of support to children and young people in distress. In many cases child helplines also represent an essential component of national child protection systems, bringing together a variety of actors to safeguard children in need. With COVID-19 causing widespread restrictions on movement in 2020, schools around the world were forced to close, risking major disruption to children's education. This Practitioner Guidance Paper shares the different approaches taken by three Family for Every Child Members to mitigate this disruption: moving to online learning for unaccompanied minors with METAdrasi in Greece; using the radio to provide far-reaching lessons with FOST in Zimbabwe; and engaging parents in their children's education using a socially-distanced homework collection system with CAP Liberia.
