Abstract
This article examines the housing and social policies for URMs in Greece. The main argument is that the social policies pursued have residual characteristics and focus on emergency housing services, a form of management that does not favor the social integration of URMs. Instead, it traps them in dismal conditions that violate the human rights. The findings of the scholarly review and the field research shed further light on another aspect of the shrinking of the welfare state which, along with the EU refugee repression policies, trap a vulnerable group in extreme forms of…

Girls on the move face a multitude of often gender-specific challenges during their migration journey and programming adjustments are needed to appropriately respond to their needs and fulfil their rights. In the data collected in this research, no evidence was found of specific migration routes in the Balkans being preferred by families travelling with girls, although it did suggest a greater level of preparation, resulting in somewhat slower mobility of families with children and of unaccompanied and separated girls. The findings confirmed the…
Refugee women and children face specific risks and their needs are, quite rightly, highlighted and addressed by the humanitarian community. However, the situation and specific needs of single male refugees is often less understood. This report aims to address this information gap. With a focus on the situation in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Greece, it aims to provide a better understanding of the gendered impact of the refugee crisis on unaccompanied adolescent boys, aged 13 to 17, and men, single or living separately from their families; and to highlight actual and potential gaps in the…
Concerned by the protection risks faced by women and girls, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) undertook a joint seven-day assessment mission to Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in November 2015. This report describes the assessment’s findings and key recommendations for the European Union (EU), transit and destination country governments, humanitarian actors and civil society organizations (CSOs). The assessment found that women and girl refugees and migrants face grave protection…
This report presents a joint NGO roadmap for more fair and humane policies for refugee and migrant youth in Greece. For real progress to be made, says the report, a few concrete actions must be taken by the Greek Government, EU member states, the European…

According to this article from the Voice of America, migrant children in Greece will begin school next week. The Greek Education Minister states that 1,500 children will be taught at 20 public schools or in classrooms at six refugee camps starting Monday.
Council of Europe Secretary General Jagland sent a letter to Heads of Government of all 47 states of the Council of Europe to urge them to better ensure the safety and proper treatment of asylum-seeking and refugee children entering Europe. He also outlined a list of priority measures.
This action comes after an estimated 300,000 children arrived in Europe last year, many of whom were unaccompanied. It is estimated that one in three of the migrants and asylum seekers crossing between Greece and Turkey is a child. According to Europol, at least 10,000 children have…
