Executive Summary
Girls on the move face a multitude of often gender-specific challenges during their migration journey and programming adjustments are needed to appropriately respond to their needs and fulfil their rights. In the data collected in this research, no evidence was found of specific migration routes in the Balkans being preferred by families travelling with girls, although it did suggest a greater level of preparation, resulting in somewhat slower mobility of families with children and of unaccompanied and separated girls. The findings confirmed the…
Abstract
Background
Migrants’ journeys can be non-linear and directed towards abstract destinations, with endings better marked by periods of integration rather than arrival in any particular place. This study explores how male unaccompanied migrant children’s interactions with child protection staff in Greece shape their future trajectories as migrants.
Methods
The transcripts of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 26 youth who were placed in accommodation facilities for unaccompanied minors in Greece were qualitatively analyzed using inductive coding. Attention was paid to…

Institutions are never a suitable care option for any child, including refugee and migrant unaccompanied children. Yet, despite dedicated efforts and significant progress towards deinstitutionalisation across Europe in recent years, institutional care is too often the default response to unaccompanied migrant, asylum-seeking and refugee children.
This new report, Rethinking care: Improving support for unaccompanied migrant, asylum-seeking and refugee children in the European Union, is the result of collaboration between Lumos Foundation and a steering…

The undersigned organizations of this Call to Action jointly call on the governments of European Union (EU) Member States to immediately commit to the emergency relocation of unaccompanied children from the Greek islands to other European countries, giving precedence to existing family links and the best interests of the child. Action is all the more urgent in light of the escalating violence on Lesbos and as increased arrivals to the islands could lead to further deterioration of the dangerous conditions in the camps.
ABSTRACT: This particular paper has been focused on the multiple discriminations suffered by women and on the problems that they face in the field of refuging and immigration, as recorded to a large extent through informal interviewing of public agencies staff that are involved in this issue. Migrant women are described as “exclusion within the exclusion”, while pointing to the efforts of public agencies in European Union and especially Greece, such as the General Secretariat for Gender Equality, to address the problem.
The G.A.IN. 'Guardianship advanced Instruments for child protection in Europe' project, funded by the European Commission, involved 4 countries - Italy, Greece, Hungary and Belgium - with the aim of ensuring better protection and respect for the rights of migrant children, by strengthening the guardianship system.
This manual seeks to contribute to this objective by providing key information and guidance for guardians and tutors of unaccompanied foreign minors. The manual is written in Italian.
