Abstract
Background
Migrants’ journeys can be non-linear and directed towards abstract destinations, with endings better marked by periods of integration rather than arrival in any particular place. This study explores how male unaccompanied migrant children’s interactions with child protection staff in Greece shape their future trajectories as migrants.
Methods
The transcripts of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 26 youth who were placed in accommodation facilities for unaccompanied minors in Greece were qualitatively analyzed using inductive coding. Attention was paid to…

ABSTRACT: This particular paper has been focused on the multiple discriminations suffered by women and on the problems that they face in the field of refuging and immigration, as recorded to a large extent through informal interviewing of public agencies staff that are involved in this issue. Migrant women are described as “exclusion within the exclusion”, while pointing to the efforts of public agencies in European Union and especially Greece, such as the General Secretariat for Gender Equality, to address the problem.

This chapter demonstrates how ‘nonlegal forms of normative ordering’ (Merry 1988: 870) such as those that inhere in national discourses and perceptions, and that are held by legal subjects themselves, can interrupt and recast formal legal structures. The ethnographic material presented includes narratives of the minors about their life in Greece while waiting for the examination of their asylum application. The chapter highlights the…

This article also outlines the legal obligations and EU directives for looking after UACs. Finally, it summarizes the challenges for social workers on the ground of responding to the rights of the incoming UACs. Selected examples are presented with reference…
Abstract
The present study explores sexual abuse and exploitation of unaccompanied migrant children in Greece, and the risk factors associated with their occurrence. This study was conducted in Greece during 2016, at a time when inadequate official response to the ongoing migration crisis, including to the large number of unaccompanied child arrivals, led to a dire child protection crisis. Twenty-four in depth interviews were conducted with key informants in four of the main migrant hosting localities in Greece. The qualitative data reveal a series of institutional, legislative…
