Care leavers are young people who have grown up in the care system, either in foster care or in residential care homes in transition from care to adulthood. They are a vulnerable group, with a high risk of negative outcomes such as poor mental health. The development of agency and the promotion of well-being are two of the most important aspects of the psychological and educational intervention with care leavers.
The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the relationship between agency and well-being in a group of care leavers (N = 48) recruited from the…
This study aimed to investigate relational outcomes of Italian emancipated foster youth across open-ended reflections about their perceptions of their relationships with the biological and foster family, with partner and peers. A total of 26 Italian emancipated foster youth (19–25 years old) recruited by social services completed a single in-depth interview. A qualitative thematic analysis was selected for this study.
The results revealed two major themes of foster care experience that emerged often simultaneously from the participants’ narration:

Abstract
CPS (Child Protection Services) workers are required to assess the level of safety of referred minors and to identify the best intervention to protect them. CPS workers’ decision making, in particular the child removal decision, has been the focus of a growing number of studies in order to identify which factors influence workers’ evaluation. The present study aimed to investigate both familial and mother/father-related risk and protective factors that influenced CPS workers’ decision about the child placement through the “judgment analysis” approach.
We analyzed 340 social…
The context:
Numerous studies have highlighted that in Europe people with care experience are amongst the most socially excluded groups and are at greater risk of poor outcomes in education, health, employment, criminality, mental health and social functioning in general as compared to the wider population.
Leaving the formal alternative care system is an important phase for both young people and the service providers responsible for their care and development. All the efforts and investments made throughout the child’s alternative care path risk being rendered futile if the preparation…
Adolescents placed in residental-care, due to their past adverse experiences of abandonment, abuse or neglect in the family of origin, are more vulnerable to emotonal-behavioral problems and showed rates of psychopathology that ranges between 71% - 76,2% (Jozefak et al., 2016). Emotonal-behavioral problems, in terms of internalizing (i.e. depression, anxiety, withdrawn) and externalizing symptoms (i.e. delinquency and aggressive behaviors) may be related to atachment and Emotonal Regulaton (ER) strategies, i.e. Cognitve Reappraisal and Expressive Suppression (John & Gross, 2004, Pace et…
