The G.A.IN. 'Guardianship advanced Instruments for child protection in Europe' project, funded by the European Commission, involved 4 countries - Italy, Greece, Hungary and Belgium - with the aim of ensuring better protection and respect for the rights of migrant children, by strengthening the guardianship system.
This manual seeks to contribute to this objective by providing key information and guidance for guardians and tutors of unaccompanied foreign minors. The manual is written in Italian.
The Opening Doors 2018 country factsheets provide an update about the progress with the transition from institutional to family- and community-based care (also known as deinstitutionalisation). The new generation of country snapshots covers 12 EU Member States, 2 EU pre-accession and 2 EU neighbouring countries. This factsheet highlights the developments and challenges still ahead in Belgium and offers key recommendations to the EU and the national government to ensure that children are cared for in family-based settings.
Abstract
Continuity is seen as an important aim for the quality of youth-care services. However, views on continuity are predominantly guided by experts, without much attention to user perspectives. This paper focuses on youngsters’ experienced continuity in relation to youth-care services. Twenty-five youngsters, who were in residential care or reached by low-threshold youth services, were interviewed about their experiences in and out of care. In this contribution results of a qualitative study on adult care leavers in Flanders (Belgium) are discussed. Life history interviews with 38 adult care leavers (21-66 years) were conducted to shed light on how a history of being in residential/foster care may impact on further lives.
