Childhood maltreatment is associated with an increased risk of insecure/disorganized attachment and in turn with suicidal risk (SR). Out-of-family placement is aimed at interrupting child exposure to further abuse and at providing the necessary security for proper development via the establishment of an alternative attachment relationship. This study focuses on the continuity and disruptions of foster placements in France. Its aim is to understand the effects on emotional regulation (coping strategies and temperament) of fostered children and adolescents. Participants were 221 French children aged 7 to 16. Three types of French placement history were examined (single placements, multiple placements, and mixed parental and foster home placements). Every year in France, nearly 50 infants live in a prison nursery with their mother. According to French law, infants can live with their mother in the prison nursery until they reach 18 months of age. The international community is concerned about the lack of validated social, medical and legal data on these infants living in prison. This was a retrospective and descriptive study.
