Abstract:
Purpose:
Foster care children are a highly vulnerable population and their experiences in care are considered crucial to their developmental and psychosocial wellbeing. Placement instability has been considered a possible risk factor for developmental difficulties due to its impact on the development of a reparative attachment relationship and sense of relational permanence. The current review synthesizes the literature regarding the impact of placement instability on behavioural and mental health outcomes in foster care children. Three major databases and…

Application of scientific findings to effective practice and informed policymaking is an aspiration for much research in the biomedical, behavioural, and developmental sciences. But too often translations of science to practice are conceptually narrow, ethically underspecified, and developed quickly as salves to an urgent problem. For developmental science, widely implemented parenting interventions are prime examples of technical translations from knowledge about the causes of children’s mental distress. Aiming to support family relationships and facilitate adaptive child development, these…

Detailed information on the selected indicators is provided along with guidance for the collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting on these indicators at national and global levels.
In cases where an indicator refers to a wider age range, the indicator metadata includes a…

Applying Urban Walker’s expressive-collaborative framework to 30 qualitative interviews with foster parents, foster children, parents, and professionals, the authors elaborate and apply a three-level reflection on Christian foster parents’ ethics of care in everyday practice of foster care.
A first-level reflection demonstrates that integrating the foster child in the foster family often leads to predominant…

Abstract:
New research shows that children exposed to early psychosocial deprivation benefit substantially from family-based care. The results were presented by senior author Kathryn L. Humphreys, PhD, at the 2023 annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. Results of research from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project, the first randomized controlled trial of foster care as an alternative to institutional (orphanage) care, showed that the positive effects of foster care last more than two decades.

Abstract:
After a survey on the essential features of the Islamic child foster care called kafala, the present chapter investigates how domestic legal systems of Western States have dealt with it, particularly concerning to the right of family reunification and to intercountry adoptions.
The chapter also is aimed at highlighting the consequences of the recognition of the kafala related to the religious freedom of the immigrant’s family, with a special concern to intergenerational transmission of religious values and the religious education of children in host countries.
