This report provides an updated data-driven assessment of female genital mutilation (FGM) around the world. It narrates through numbers the stories of millions of girls and women who have survived the practice and the millions more who remain at risk.
The report reveals that over 230 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM – a 15 per cent increase, or 30 million more girls and women, compared to the data released eight years ago. The largest share of the global burden is found in African countries, with over 144 million cases, followed by over 80…
Application of scientific findings to effective practice and informed policymaking is an aspiration for much research in the biomedical, behavioural, and developmental sciences. But too often translations of science to practice are conceptually narrow, ethically underspecified, and developed quickly as salves to an urgent problem. For developmental science, widely implemented parenting interventions are prime examples of technical translations from knowledge about the causes of children’s mental distress. Aiming to support family relationships and facilitate adaptive child development, these…
This publication is meant to guide the collection of reliable, internationally comparable data on key ECD indicators, the selection of which was informed by the Nurturing Care Framework.
While data on ECD come from different sources, this publication focuses on those that can be produced through household surveys. Detailed information on the selected indicators is provided along with guidance for the collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting on these indicators at national and global levels.
In cases where an indicator refers to a wider age range, the indicator metadata includes a…
This manual aims to help countries and their national statistical systems to improve the collection, analysis, sharing and use of data on children on the move. It also shares several country experiences regarding migration data flows and official statistics. Reliable data and official statistics are key to…
Kafaalah is defined as “the commitment to voluntarily take care of the maintenance, health, education and protection of a child, in the same way a parent would do for a child. This type of care arrangement does not sever the biological family bonds of the child or alter the descent lines for the sponsor family. Kafaalah is an Islamic mode of alternative childcare in which a person or family voluntarily commits himself/herself to sponsor and care for an orphan or any other child deprived of family care.
This form of care is recognized in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the…
Objective:
The Bucharest Early Intervention Project is the first randomized controlled trial of foster care as an alternative to institutional care. The authors synthesized data from nearly 20 years of assessments of the trial to determine the overall intervention effect size across time points and developmental domains. The goal was to quantify the overall effect of the foster care intervention on children’s outcomes and examine sources of variation in this effect, including domain, age, and sex assigned at birth.
Methods:
An intent-to-treat approach was used to examine the causal…

In 2015, the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was framed around the pledge of leaving no one behind. It calls for a commitment to ensure that all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), comprising 169 targets, are achieved for the benefit of all members of society. It emphasizes reaching those furthest behind first, which inevitably includes children with disabilities and their families.
Monitoring the inclusion of children with disabilities in development efforts has long been held back by the lack of reliable and comprehensive data. Recent years, however, have…
