Child protection services are seen as the largest field of social work service delivery in South Africa. Repeated warnings of the ‘crisis state’ of child protection services have gone unheeded. The aim of this article is to determine the current landscape of child protection service delivery and research within the South African context. The developmental social welfare approach was used as the epistemological framework for this systematic review. Findings indicated a significant emphasis on statutory services and a lack of resources for family preservation efforts. Appropriate costing models…
Abstract
In Mozambique, more than a million children are living with HIV or are otherwise vulnerable due to HIV. In response to this crisis, the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funds programs that serve orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV and their families. These programs retain case workers, known as activistas, who provide and refer beneficiaries to services to increase beneficiaries’ knowledge of their HIV status and to improve retention in care among those living with HIV. To improve program effectiveness, implementing organizations need to…

The provision of care by extended family members and close friends is a common cultural practice in Ghanaian traditional communities. Background
Orphan-hood is a major consequence of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) pandemic globally. In South Africa most children who are AIDS orphans live in township communities. They are often uncared for and unsupported by the community, and experience recurrent psychological trauma and much personal suffering. Identifying the “barriers to” and “recommendations for” providing care and support to these vulnerable children is vital to enable the development of comprehensive implementations to meet these children’s unique care and support needs.

Abstract
Signs of development delays and malnutrition are widespread among young children in low-income settings. Social protection programs such as cash transfers are increasingly combined with behavioral change promotion or parenting interventions to improve early childhood development. This paper disentangles the effects of behavioral change promotion from cash transfers to poor households through an experiment embedded in a government program in Niger. The study is also designed to identify within-community spillovers from the behavioral change intervention. The findings show that…
Abstract
In recent years there has been a significant escalation in the number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in South Africa, mainly due to the scourge of the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The author argues that early childhood education interventions for OVC should be a priority of government since quality education and care programs in the early years can enhance the possibility of breaking the cycle of inequity in the lives of OVC and positively contribute to the economy of the country. Based on the educational, psychological and…
