The Road Map for ending the placement of children aged 0-6 years in residential care is a tool that ensures all components of child protective care: health, adequate nutrition, care, safety and early education, through the intersectoral collaboration between the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and Research and local public administration authorities.
More effective coordination and consolidation of joint efforts for policy implementation in all three areas will contribute to the achievement of the EU-Moldova Association Agenda…
Traditionally, residential youth care (RYC) in the Netherlands has been characterized by short-term placements, groups with relatively large numbers of youth (8– 12), often located on a campus with several RYC units. Recently, alternative RYC settings have been developed to create a home-like environment and promote stability. These alternative settings are characterized by long-term care, smaller groups (typically 6), and placements within the community. Examples of alternative RYC settings are home-like groups and family-style group homes (with livein professionals).

While there is a growing body of research suggesting that care leavers experience disadvantages in early adulthood, there is only one study at hand that uses panel data to analyze long term effects. Based on this idea, the authors examine data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), covering a 50-year period, and use matching methods to compare care leavers who have been in residential care or lived with foster parents to a control group. The results indicate that being placed in out-of-home care is associated with disadvantages in terms of unemployment, life satisfaction and health. The…
This study reports results concerning close embodied practices, involving touch, in early childhood care settings in Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data—video recordings of everyday practices in contexts of childcare—were collected during various phases of the pandemic.
The study demonstrates a broad range of uses of touch, by adults and children themselves in various age groups and for various social purposes. Touch as embodied intimacy was initiated by educators, and by children, both within their peer group and towards educators.
Touch served the purposes of embodied…
Abstract:
LGBTQ+ youth strengthen their resilience resources through the development of meaningful relationships that provide them with unique tools to combat the stress derived from experiences of discrimination and violence targeting their marginalized identities. However, more research is needed to understand how this group benefits from the social support provided by child welfare professionals and how these relational processes may strengthen their resilience, since these professionals are often the only adult models of relationship, even after leaving care.
The focus of…
The Transition Hub aims to support young people aged 11 to 17 who are making the transition into care or experiencing a placement transition.
It does this through a multi-disciplinary team which provides support to young people, their carers and schools. Developed by Dr Catherine Carroll, working in collaboration with Achieving for Children and Barnet Local Authority, the Transition Hub aims to support the social and academic development of young people. Depending on the young person’s situation, either they receive ‘inreach’ support delivered in a physical hub for up to six weeks followed…
Group climate in residential youth care is considered to be essential for treatment of youth and young adults. Various instruments exist to measure quality of living group climate, but some are lengthy, use complicated wording, which make them difficult to fill out by youth and individuals with a mild intellectual disability. The present study based in the Netherlands describes the development and rationale for the Group Climate Instrument—Revised (GCI-R).
Construct validity and reliability of the GCI-R were examined by means of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in a two-step validation…
“Why financial resources? Why should we be interested in this aspect when we enter institutions, when we are in a hurry, the priority is to intervene, to support the child, to reintegrate him, to return him home.”Daniela Mamaliga, Director of Partnerships for Every Child, presents the findings and conclusions of a comprehensive 2022 financial assessment conducted by CTWWC in six residential institutions. The financial assessments aimed to inform political decisions on the future of the six institutions, including their transformation/reorganization…
The increasing arrival of unaccompanied immigrant youth to Europe has been challenging for established political and social interventions. A range of social and educational services have been developed to help young immigrants in their transition to adulthood and these programmes are often spaces where they can meet supportive adults. Twenty semi-structured interviews with unaccompanied immigrant youth residing in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area were carried out.
This qualitative study explores the prevalence and role of natural mentors in their lives. Furthermore, the authors go deeper…
