Young Australians exiting Out-of-Home Care (OOHC) face some of the most challenging access to justice issues due to experiences of trauma, increased interactions with the justice system, distrust of government services, high rates of socioeconomic disadvantage and a lack of accessible support services. This article outlines the experience of the Mid North Coast Legal Centre (MNCLC) which, through the LevelUP Project, aimed to bridge this access to justice gap with a shake-up of the traditional legal services model. Through this experience, MNCLC offers some suggestions for legal centres…
"Left-behind children" refer to children whose parents or one of them go out to work in the city all year round. Due to the education conditions in the city, they stay alone in the countryside. Because they are separated from their parents all the year round, the lack of good family education in their growth environment has brought many negative effects on their growth and also caused more serious social problems. It can be seen that the research on the family education of left-behind children in rural areas is very necessary. Therefore, this study takes G Village in Guizhou Province as an…
This study examined the reasons for the pervasiveness of the practice of child abandonment, using the “Skolombo Boys and Lakasara Girls’’ in Calabar, the state capital of Cross River State, Nigeria, as the analytical context. Globally, there are approximately 150 million children roaming the street without care or shelter (United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organizations, 2017). These children are chased from their respective home by violence, drug and alcohol use and abuse, death of either or both parents, family dysfunction, war, natural disaster, insurgency or simply socio-…
The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) leads the Children in Families (CIF) Technical Working Group, a consortium of child-focused organizations promoting family care for institutionalized children in Zambia. The consortium is implementing the CIF Plus (CIF+) pilot, a holistic, integrated approach to reintegration case management. Each partner is leveraging their strengths and capacities towards a collective effort to successfully reintegrate 81 children from child care facilities (CCFs) in Lusaka district into families over three years (2019-2021). See…
Funded by the GHR Foundation, the CIF+ pilot is a collaborative, locally led, intensive effort with the main aim to reintegrate 200 children from CCFs in Lusaka district, into families over a period of three years (2019-2021). Through strong documentation of the innovative collective approach, the pilot will inform MCDSS efforts to develop a replicable and scalable model for more effective case management and successful reintegration for children living in CCFs. The pilot also responds to GHR’s overall goal to support the development of robust, resilient country-level systems…
Adolescents living in residential youth care (RYC) are at risk for disadvantaged social relationships, which in turn present a risk factor for increased loneliness. Social relationships of Slovenian adolescents aged 15–18 years and living in RYC group homes (N = 51) or in their primary families (N = 100) were investigated by relying on the social convoy framework. The participants also provided self-reports on the Revised UCLA Loneliness scale. Results revealed substantial differences between the two groups of adolescents in the structure (number of members, frequency of…
Left-behind children (LBC) are a social and educational concern in China. Researchers have identified psychological and behavioural effects on LBC. This study creates a profile of LBC in rural Sichuan and identifies life and values education (LVE) as a beneficial intervention. Interviews were conducted with six LBC, two parents and one teacher. The data indicate that LBC face challenges in the areas of parental communication, being raised in non-parental homes, family and social networks, and regulation of emotions. LVE may help minimise the negative consequences experienced by LBC but lack…

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated inequalities and barriers to social inclusion for people with disabilities. These experiences of social exclusion have been felt to an even greater extent by women with disabilities and under-represented groups of people with disabilities, leading to a range of effects on the operations and priorities of Organisation of People with Disabilities (OPDs). To address a critical gap in the evidence base, the Disability Inclusion Helpdesk carried out a rapid assessment of the role of OPDs during the pandemic, and how the pandemic has affected OPDs’ operations…
This working paper focuses on two critical global challenges: violence against children and climate change. The links between the two are not always obvious, but they exist and are significant in terms of both causes and solutions. Combating the causes of climate change can impact positively on certain contexts in which children are at high risk of experiencing violence.
This working paper proposes a framework and provides evidence on the links between the causes and consequences of violence against children and some of the underlying practices responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions…
