The COVID-19 pandemic demands federal action that includes protecting and promoting the well being of all families now, and into the future—especially for immigrant families. This brief explores how policymakers can begin to build a comprehensive and inclusive system of supports to protect immigrant families.
Abstract
As this paper was being written, school systems across the country were increasingly announcing plans for full or partial distance learning to respond to COVID-19, and it seems likely that more school systems may implement these plans should the pandemic surge in the fall or winter. As a result, working parents with school-age children are faced with the challenge of how to ensure that their children are in a safe learning setting while they work—a challenge that is even more daunting for families with low incomes, families who face greater health risks, and families who face…
COVID-19 and the indirect impacts of government response measures threaten the immediate and long-term well-being of children, particularly those most vulnerable. In order to reach the most vulnerable, it is critical that all stakeholders collaborate to deliver child-sensitive social protection.
Based on World Vision's extensive experience working with children and families in crisis, this policy brief outlines recommendations to stakeholders, such as governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and donors, and calls for the use of child-sensitive social protection in these…
COVID-19 leaves few lives and places untouched. But its impact is harshest for those groups who were already in vulnerable situations before the crisis. This is particularly true for many people on the move, such as migrants in irregular situations, migrant workers with precarious livelihoods, or working in the informal economy, victims of trafficking in persons as well as people fleeing their homes because of persecution, war, violence, human rights violations or disaster, whether within their own countries — internally displaced persons (IDPs) — or across international borders — refugees…
Summary
Following the provisions of the 2016 Immigration Act to permit the transfer of unaccompanied children the Scottish Government, COSLA, and local authorities have entered into negotiations with the Home Office to facilitate the arrival of children and young people to Scotland. The present research sought to explore the capacity, experience and understanding of local authorities to provide a support system that can best ensure the wellbeing of children, as it has been suggested that outside of the large urban authorities there is limited experience of working with separated children…

Estimates suggests that between 2011 and 2013, at least half a million children experienced the deportation of a parent (Capps et al. 2015). While multiple studies document the numerous psychological and economic effects of this aggressive system of immigration enforcement, an understudied area in this literature is how families navigate family life throughout the process of a detention and/or deportation. By doing so, this study recognizes that families perform new roles including advocacy, emotional anchoring, and financial laboring in an attempt to maintain…

Based on experience from work on the ground, Save the Children has identified a number of key issues that urgently need to be addressed by the EU and its Member States to ensure better management of mixed migration flows for children and their families, including separated and unaccompanied children. All children on the move, including economic migrants and environmentally displaced children, need responses for their protection and support that are child-focused, coherent and coordinated both within and between countries.
This joint publication from Child Trends and the National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families calls attention to the critical need to support immigrant families in the US who have been negatively affected by the trauma of separation, and who will likely continue to experience considerable adversity in the future, even if reunited with their loved ones. The publication offers research-based guidance for parents, service providers, communities, and policymakers and advocates for the use of trauma-informed care (TIC) to promote…
