The increasing arrival of unaccompanied immigrant youth to Europe has been challenging for established political and social interventions. A range of social and educational services have been developed to help young immigrants in their transition to adulthood and these programmes are often spaces where they can meet supportive adults. Twenty semi-structured interviews with unaccompanied immigrant youth residing in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area were carried out.
This qualitative study explores the prevalence and role of natural mentors in their lives. Furthermore, the authors go deeper…
This paper investigates the effects of a migration control policy in mega cities after 2014 in China on parent–child separation. One of the key initiatives of the policy is to restrict the access of migrant children to public education in cities. The authors employ two empirical approaches: one that leverages variations in policy implementation pressure across cities, and another that exploits variations in restrictions on migrant children’s access to education across cities and over time.
The authors found that the policy contributes to an increased probability of children being left…
Abstract:
This paper explores the rarely examined experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors in Nairobi, Kenya. Children are thought to comprise up to a third of Nairobi’s refugee population, however, there is virtually no data on them.
The paper provides a first analysis of a unique dataset to ascertain unaccompanied minor refugees’ experiences of physical, emotional, resource related, and sexual violence. The authors' research findings indicate widespread violence among refugee children living in Nairobi, and denote the prevalence of several kinds of violence in particular.…
Abstract:
In migration studies, male migrants and their stay-behind families, including women and children have been an area of sustained academic investigation in the Global South. The unaccompanied children of female migrants remain, however, an area of peripheral interest in the existing literature. Millions of South Asian female migrants work in two major destination regions: the GCC countries and Southeast Asia.
They are often married with children and their traditional role as mothers is transferred to and executed by other members of the extended family, giving rise to an…
Tackling the triple injustices: Gender, climate, social
Climate-induced displacement is an option of last resort. It preys on those who are unable to adapt to the ecological and social consequences of climate change, whether due to lack of resources or other inequities. For most of these people, climate-induced displacement is triggered by direct physical harm from extreme weather events or slow-onset impacts, but also by indirect consequences on food insecurity and conflict over natural resources and land rights. According to UNOCHA, 8 of the world’s worst food crises are linked…
This report outlines the causes and consequences of climate-induced displacement, and how the triple injustice of climate change, poverty and gender inequality must be met by transformative action: to support more gender-equal and resilient communities in sustainable environments. In this report, CARE draws on key scientific findings as well as its own experience and, most importantly, the experiences of the people CARE seeks to support in managing compound risks: women and girls in vulnerable situations.
To tackle climate-induced displacement in a gender-transformative and human-rights…
Abstract:
This article presents an example of critical best social work practice with unaccompanied minor asylum seekers. Based on a critical perspective, it focuses on social and community work interventions in the first reception centre, established in Greece, before the huge influx of refugees in 2015, aiming to support, empower and achieve social integration of the hosted youths.
Drawing from the first author’s narrative, recalling her practice experience in the field as an ‘intervening researcher’, the article discusses the actions taken through a critical perspective.…
The objective of this webinar was to present the best practices learnt in the implementation of the foster care system as an alternative to limited child care institutions for children on the move in The Gambia.
BACKGROUND
In The Gambia, child care institutions are not adequate to respond to the growing needs of children needing protection and assistance services. There is only one Government-owned Shelter for children which is at central level, meaning that, all cases of identified children needing support were ultimately referred to this shelter.
Considering the…
