Where children may be engaged in vocational training, livelihoods or decent work programmes, humanitarian actors will need to verify the age of the child, to ensure that children are old enough to participate. Conflict (including terrorist attacks) and displacement/forced displacement (to temporary sites or camps deprived of basic services) are the main factors shaping the political context of this region. The security situation is also undermined by the presence of terrorist groups.
Several countries in the region are further disaster-prone (such as is the case in DRC, Liberia, CAR) and subject to serious consequences of climate change on the environment and people’s livelihood. Summary
Age assessment is a complex process with possible far‐reaching consequences for those affected by it. In comparison with other age diagnosis methods, those used in estimating legal age or minor status should minimize false positives with the aim of avoiding mistaken classification of a minor as of legal age. In cases of asylum‐seekers or unaccompanied minors, interest is focused upon determining whether an individual is a child or an adult, which is set in most countries at 18 years of age. Medical assessment is perceived as the most reliable and accurate way of assessing age, and…
This technical note presents a conceptual framework for localisation in protection and education coordination. It includes a description of the role of coordinators and coordination groups in localization and examples of how localization can be integrated in the humanitarian program cycle.
Around the world, children rely on psychosocial support, family tracing, reunification, education and other services to keep them safe. The majority of these services are already being delivered by local government and civil society organisations. Strengthening localization is therefore an…
