Abstract
Unaccompanied refugee minors have been widely recognized as a group of “vulnerable” children and adolescents, in need of special care and reception structures. Equally, in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, their specific needs and related rights are stipulated, urging receiving states to ensure unaccompanied children's needs on adequate care services. Yet, the ‘specific care and reception structures’ that many Western states have created for this growing group of unaccompanied minors are often largely separated from mainstream services within children and youth care,…
Abstract
As violence, inequity and poverty pervade El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the number of children, family units and adults seeking refuge in the United States (US) continues to increase. Upon apprehension by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE), children enter a labyrinthine immigration system that can be further traumatizing and threatening to their health and well-being. The purpose of this article is to describe the impact of current and evolving immigration policy on the health of…

Introduction
This working paper concerns the social policy intervention Cohousing and case management for Unaccompanied young adult Refugees in ANTwerp (CURANT). CURANT is an ‘innovative urban project’ funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project is led by the City of Antwerp and implemented in collaboration with a consortium of five other institutions. The central target group of CURANT are unaccompanied minors with refugee status or subsidiary protection, who have recently turned 18 and thus entered adulthood, or are about to do so. CURANT…
This manual has been developed for professionals working with reception families and the unaccompanied children living with them. The manual could therefore be used by guardians (professional, semi-professional or voluntary), social workers, mentors, staff at reception facilities, behavioural scientists, psychologists or any other professional responsible for the reception of unaccompanied children in families.
The manual is part of the…
In this paper we explore the research literature relating to the guardianship of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum. In particular, we seek to find out what type of dilemmas have been identified by research concerning the guardianship of unaccompanied minors, and the focus that the literature has therefore taken. A comprehensive search of identified databases was conducted. Ultimately, 38 publications were selected for analysis. The review was qualitative and inductive. The results of the review suggest that research has identified and focused on challenges in the form of diverging policy…
This resource from the U.S. National Child Traumatic Stress Network provides tips for current caregivers and others to help address the needs of immigrant and refugee children who have experienced traumatic separation. The relationship with a parent is critical to a child’s sense of self, safety, and trust. Separations from parents and siblings— especially under sudden, chaotic, or unpredictable circumstances such as those related to war, refugee, immigration, or detention experiences—may lead children to develop depression, anxiety, or separation-related traumatic stress symptoms. This…
Abstract: The humanitarian system is struggling to adapt to changes in the global political environment, trends in armed conflict and displacement, and advances in science and technology. In recent years, the international community has undertaken a number of efforts to overcome these challenges, such as the Agenda for Humanity, a plan that outlines the changes needed to alleviate suffering, reduce risk, and lessen vulnerability on a global scale. This article reviews recent evidence from a range of disciplines to inform these efforts, especially as they relate to the protection of children.…
Abstract
This paper presents a community based participatory research project, which adopted a photovoice approach with seven unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) living in foster care in the United Kingdom. The project also included a focus group with six foster carers to explore their perceptions of caring for UASCs. At the end of the focus group we then shared the young people's images from the photovoice project. The purpose of this was to better inform the carers understanding of this group's needs and the reality of their lived experiences, to see if this would have any…
This is Save the Children's decalogue for child support in emergencies.
In emergencies, be they natural or man-made catastrophes, children are the most vulnerable. They risk losing their home, being separated from their family members or losing them, not being able to attend school, or having to give up their daily habits and live outside of own habitual contexts.
In an emergency, Save the Children takes action by setting up "Child-Friendly Spaces" and developing recreational, educational and psychosocial support activities to provide a safe place in which children and young people can…
