On Wednesday, May 29, 2019 Princeton University and the Brookings Institution released the latest volume of “The Future of Children”—a journal that promotes effective, evidence-based policies and programs for children, along with a policy brief titled “Achieving Broad-Scale Impacts for Social Programs.” This volume, titled “Universal Approaches to Promoting Healthy Development,” explores universal social programs designed to serve entire…
Abstract
To make a serious dent in the [US] social and health problems, the child welfare system— and others—must develop strategies that have broad impact on people and contexts. That is, they must seek to make a difference at the level of entire populations, rather than targeting only the individuals and families at highest risk. In this brief from Universal Approaches to Promoting Healthy Development, Ron Haskins,…
CCAI’s Foster Youth Internship Program® is a highly esteemed congressional internship for young adults who spent their formative years in the U.S. foster care system. In their annual policy report, the interns focus on subjects they are personally passionate about due to their experiences and understanding after living in foster care and make personal recommendations for improving the U.S. foster care system. This report is presented at both congressional and White House briefings. This publication includes policy reports on sibling connections, supporting foster parents, placement…
This report, published by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the UK, highlights the need to improve outcomes for children leaving care and returning to parents or relatives. Over 90,000 children were ‘looked after’ in the formal care system in England at some point during 2011, a majority as a result of abuse or neglect. Although the most common outcome for children leaving care is to return home to a parent or relative, research has also shown that around half of children who come into care because of…
There were about 24,000 children affected by AIDS living in Nepal in 2010; of these 5,000 AIDS orphans were in need of immediate support. The objective of this study was to investigate which model of care and support is more appropriate for improving psychosocial and economic security of AIDS orphans. With 5200 documented cases of AIDS orphans from 42 districts at National Association of People Living with HIV, the authors purposively selected five districts – one from each development region, based on the highest number of AIDS orphans reported. From five…

Extended family members and close family friends care for more than 2.7 million children in the United States, an increase of almost 18 percent over the past decade. The vast majority of these living…
In their policy brief, Save the Children explores the stressors experienced by families globally and the steps needed to ensure their viability. Where families lack the support to provide adequate care, children are at risk of being abandoned, placed in institutions, and of being abused and exploited. Greater political and financial commitment is needed to help build parents’ capacity to care for their children and to tackle the poverty and social exclusion that underlie many of the problems experienced by children and their families.
EveryChild is an international development charity working in over 15 countries around the world with a focus on children separated from their families and communities or in danger of being so. Their agency does this through three different intervention types: Prevention, Protection and Re-integration.
EveryChild believes the separation of children from their families or usual carers in developing countries is seriously undermining attempts to build healthy communities and meet development goals. Articles 7, 8 and 9 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child…
