Abstract:
Introduction:
As a part of the public health approach to child welfare, data about children placed in out-of-home care are needed to assess population trends, understand drivers of social and health inequities, and examine outcomes for children and families. The authors analyzed administrative data from Canada to describe the population of children in out-of-home care, and estimate and compare rates of out-of-home care by province/territory, year, sex/gender, age group and placement type.
Methods:
The authors conducted a cross-…
Application of scientific findings to effective practice and informed policymaking is an aspiration for much research in the biomedical, behavioural, and developmental sciences. But too often translations of science to practice are conceptually narrow, ethically underspecified, and developed quickly as salves to an urgent problem. For developmental science, widely implemented parenting interventions are prime examples of technical translations from knowledge about the causes of children’s mental distress. Aiming to support family relationships and facilitate adaptive child development, these…
This publication is meant to guide the collection of reliable, internationally comparable data on key ECD indicators, the selection of which was informed by the Nurturing Care Framework.
While data on ECD come from different sources, this publication focuses on those that can be produced through household surveys. Detailed information on the selected indicators is provided along with guidance for the collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting on these indicators at national and global levels.
In cases where an indicator refers to a wider age range, the indicator metadata includes a…
This report provides an in-depth analysis of the situation of children in alternative care and in adoption in Europe and Central Asia (ECA) based on available data from TransMonEE, as well as other sources such as MICS, DataCare and the Conference of European Statisticians (CES). It marks the first analysis of data on children in…
Strand 3: Mapping integration and outcomes in Scotland: A statistical analysis investigated if the most recent major structural reform of health and social care services to take place in Scotland has had an impact on outcomes for children, young people and families.
The authors mapped the range of different approaches to integrated service delivery across Scotland’s 32 local authority areas and investigated, through the statistical modelling of administrative data, any potential effects of structural integration on a range of outcomes over time for children and young…
This manual aims to help countries and their national statistical systems to improve the collection, analysis, sharing and use of data on children on the move. It provides analytical guidance to national statistical authorities and relevant actors on how to acquire or enhance the appropriate capacity to collect data on migrant and displaced children, in compliance with the United Nations’ Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics.
It also shares several country experiences regarding migration data flows and official statistics. Reliable data and official statistics are key to…
This web application was developed to allow for the exploration of various scenarios in the field of education, health, and child protection. The application offers a platform for the analysis of historical trends and patterns using a combination of open data and proprietary data shared by the Government of Moldova.
Extrapolation of these trends and patterns could form a baseline scenario for the allocation of resources and improvement of child outcomes displayed through the web application. Through it, users can adjust these assumptions and respond to hypothetical shocks to consider how…

Abstract:
Accurate and reliable data on children living in residential care institutions are essential. However, these children are not identified through household surveys and, as a result, are not typically included in official national statistics on key indicators of child well-being. This includes indicators that comprise global monitoring frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals. To help address this data gap, UNICEF has developed the first-ever…
This webinar is the eleventh in the Transforming Children's Care Webinar Series and was co-hosted with UNICEF. In 2021, UNICEF launched its latest approach to Child Protection Systems Strengthening (CPSS), together with benchmarks for measuring the CPSS work, and high impact CPSS interventions.
The objective of this webinar was to present this CPSS approach, and reflect on how this approach, and especially the seven intermediate…
In 2021, a household survey was implemented as part of CTWWC’s Year 3 Review. It was designed to address the following research questions:
1. What aspects of family strengthening support do caregivers think have affected (negatively and positively) their ability to care and provide for their children?
2. What proportion of children and caregivers report selected protective factors in their life?
3. What proportion of children at risk of separation from their families, as well as children and young people who have been reunified or placed in family-based care or in independent living…
