The Australian government introduced a Modern Slavery Bill into parliament in July, which is expected to be passed before the end of 2018. The Bill recognises orphanage trafficking and exploitation of children in institutions within the scope of the definition of modern slavery, making Australia the first country in the world to recognise this form of modern slavery in legislation.
The proposed legislation and the growing recognition of orphanage trafficking and orphanage tourism as a form of child exploitation could have implications for a range of Australian organisations and businesses…
This video from the Thomson Reuters Foundation Trust Conference 2018 highlights the "actions" that participants can take to address the issues presented at the conference, particularly actions related to ending orphanage trafficking. In the video, Chloe Setter of Lumos asks participants to examine how they may be contributing to the orphanage industry through sending volunteers or donations and in-kind support and look at how they can transition away from this. Setter also calls…
A panel event on orphanage trafficking was held at Thomson Reuters Foundation's Trust Conference 2018 on 14 November 2018. This video captures the discussions of that event, including a statement from one young care leaver from Nepal who told her story of being institutionalized in the country. The panelists also included survivors of orphanage trafficking from Kenya and Serbia.
This podcast episode from the Faith to Action Initiative features an interview with Peter Kamau, Founding Partner of Child in Family Focus – Kenya, about his experience growing up in an orphanage. Peter provides insight about why many careleavers struggle after leaving care; the best services to offer careleavers; and resources to help those supporting careleavers.
The “Seven Standards of Excellence in Short-Term Mission” provide guidelines that help avoid harm and maximize benefits in short-term missions. The following principles are offered as a supplement to these standards, providing guidance for international service trips intended to benefit orphaned and vulnerable children.
These principles have been developed and approved by the Christian Alliance for Orphans, comprised of more than 190 respected organizations serving children in more than 130 nations. We establish these principles in unity, seeking to empower every church, organization, and…
The focus of this thesis is the position of orphans, vulnerable children and orphanages in Ghana in relation to the ‘help’ they receive from western volunteers and NGOs. This position is often viewed differently by NGOs, volunteers, and their ‘host’ communities. The author's main argument is that the western aid ‘industry’ (Crewe and Harrison 1998, 15) has played a major role in the proliferation of orphanages in Ghana. Ghanaians – adults and children – involved in orphanages in the Volta Region are active agents in this process of receiving aid from NGOs and western volunteers.…
This book gathers and develops theoretical insights and practical tools to support ethical global learning through community-campus partnerships like those described in its pages. The authors draw on research and insights from several academic disciplines and community partner perspectives along with decades of applied, community-based development and education experience. The book warns of the "perils" of global service learning (GSL), stating "Some efforts to engage in GSL – or at least international volunteering – have been reckless, harmful, and rightly criticized (Arends, 2014;…
This report from Disability Rights International documents the human rights violations, exploitation, and trafficking of children with and without disabilities in Guatemala. Guatemala has failed to create the protections and support needed to help children live with a family – especially children with disabilities. DRI is also concerned that private charities and international donors are supporting orphanages and perpetuating discrimination. International support – including “voluntourism” – leaves children open to segregation, abuse, and further exploitation by traffickers.
A year after…
Abstract:
This article looks at how charity organizations running private residential child care institutions on the Kenyan coast make use of the personal data of children in their care, as a means of securing and maintaining the support of donors from the global North. The strategy involves the online showcasing of children’s profiles—individual children’s photos, accompanied by their names, birth dates, annual development, and their emotion-inducing personal and/or family histories are posted on the respective organizations’ websites, making them accessible to the global public. I…
