This report is the culmination of almost four years of research. It gives an overview of the child protection situation in all 195 autonomous countries in the world.
Abstract
Introduction
Over the past decade there has been a marked growth in the use of linked population administrative data for child protection research. This is the first systematic review of studies to report on research design and statistical methods used where population-based administrative data is integrated with longitudinal data in child protection settings.

ABSTRACT
The U.S. Child Welfare System (CWS) is charged with improving outcomes for foster youth; yet, they are overburdened and underfunded. To overcome this limitation, several states have turned towards algorithmic decision-making systems to reduce costs and determine better processes for improving CWS outcomes. Using a human-centered algorithmic design approach, we synthesize 50 peer-reviewed publications on computational systems used in CWS to assess how they were being developed, common characteristics of predictors used, as well as the target outcomes. We found that most of the…
Introduction
This paper summarises findings from an initial scoping study, which seeks to review how child protection outcomes are captured when monitoring multi-purpose humanitarian cash programmes. The study intends to inform the development and piloting of new approaches to integrating child protection concerns into multi-purpose cash monitoring frameworks. It was conducted for the Alliance for Child Protection’s, Cash Transfer and Child Protection Task Force.
As the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC [WRC, 2018]) points out, humanitarian crises are often dangerous contexts that put…
This document has been produced based on a secondary data matrix compiled by the Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) using the Minimum Standards as an analysis framework. All data points are citations from the secondary data matrix which have been compared and interpreted, but not triangulated and verified.
The 2012 crisis in Mali triggered an immense humanitarian emergency. Even after progress in the implementation of the 2005 Peace Agreement in Algeria, the multidimensional nature of the crisis is worsening. The conditions of affected populations and the humanitarian…
A special issue of the Journal of Psychology, Health and Medicine is now out, featuring 15 papers commissioned by Know Violence in Childhood: A Global Learning Initiative.
The papers are written by leading researchers from diverse disciplines and countries. They address a range of issues that point to the complexity of violence experienced by children across the world – as well as evidence of strategies that are beginning to demonstrate effective ways to prevent violence. They make a strong case for policies and investments that can end violence in childhood. This is…
This special issue of the Journal of Global Social Welfare grew out of a 2014 symposium co-hosted by the Better Care Network and the CPC Learning Network, an event that convened a number of leading academics, policymakers, and practitioners involved in the development or implementation of key initiatives to better measure issues of children's care at country, regional, and…
The Child Protection Monitoring and Evaluation Reference Group’s (CP MERG) Technical Working Group on Data Collection on Violence against Children conducted a review of quantitative studies on violence against children in order to give an overview of recent data-collection activities that will inform the development of guidelines for further data collection. This report presents the findings from the Working Group’s review. The review focuses on data that have been collected in low and middle-income countries, however, some higher-income countries were reviewed as well. The report includes an…
In recent years, success in family foster care has been evaluated by examining indicators of two goals of the child welfare system: permanency and safety. Systematic measures of child well-being have not been incorporated into the administrative databases that are used for case monitoring and evaluation. This article, a chapter in the book Family Foster Care in the Next Century, describes how child well-being has been conceptualized and measured in research on family foster care, and discusses the essential dimensions that should be included in a…
This article reviews the Evidence Summit on Protecting Children Outside of Family Care held in December 2011 in Washington DC. The Summit brought together more than 150 of the world’s leading advocates for children to examine the strength of the research evidence on existing programs and interventions, and most importantly to identify critical knowledge gaps and areas where more research is needed so that systems and programs designed to improve the overall health and well-being of these vulnerable children may be strengthened.
The Evidence Summit followed a Pre-Summit held in…
