Introduction
In late 2016, ACREMET conducted a qualitative study of the family strengthening approach that underlies the Isibindi model. The study explored how the approach contributes to the improvements in children’s well-being that Isibindi achieves. The researchers studied relevant documents, conducted individual interviews and focus group discussions, and visited 18 beneficiary households to observe the situation in which Isibindi’s child and youth care workers (CYCWs) work. The study was done in three Isibindi sites – Alice in Eastern Cape, Bela-Bela in Limpopo, and…

ABSTRACT
With the orphan population escalating, communities continue to rely on relatives to provide care to orphans. Therefore, there is a need to explore the role of caregivers with regard to the well‐being of orphans, the challenges they face, as well as how they could be empowered to be more responsive to children's needs. The paper acknowledges that informal caregivers play an important role in the lives of orphans. The paper also concedes that, in the process, caregivers are faced with challenges which make it difficult for them to fulfil their responsibilities and roles. As a result…
Abstract
Childcare is a concern for governments across the world, and could be unique in diverse cultural climes. An aspect of childcare is foster care, which is largely informal in Nigeria and portends opportunities for child abuse. Our study offers ideas that would guarantee the safety of children within the informal foster care net, since the Nigerian government is yet to commit to the project of formalizing foster care. We investigated informal foster care practice in two local government areas of Anambra State, Nigeria using Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). Data were sourced from 32…

Abstract
Efforts to strengthen national child protection systems have frequently taken a top-down approach of imposing formal, government-managed services. Such expert-driven approaches are often characterized by low use of formal services and the misalignment of the nonformal and formal aspects of the child protection system. This article examines an alternative approach of community-driven, bottom-up work that enables nonformal–formal collaboration and alignment, greater use of formal services, internally driven social change, and high levels of community ownership. The…
