Residential child and youth care is examined in places from which practice-based evidence has been rarely shared with the rest of the World. Building on Volume 1 that used the FIFA Football Confederation Regions to step outside contemporary discourses about residential child and youth care, further contributions from 23 UEFA countries are offered in this second volume which follows. A brief rationale for the study and its comparative methodology is offered before highlighting five emergent themes about residential child and youth care in Europe, including: residential child and youth care…
Throughout history, technological development has had a major impact on society as a whole. Today we find that access to the internet is ubiquitous, and in recent years this has touched the lives particularly of children and young people. As most young people in Norway own a smartphone, the web has become significantly more integrated into their lives, bringing with it many new opportunities. At the same time, it can lead to challenges, including the increased incidence of sexual offences committed against children over the internet. There is reason to believe that children and adolescents…
The third report of Save the Children's Stop the War on Children campaign reveals shocking trends in the threats to the safety and wellbeing of children living in areas impacted by conflict. While fewer children are living in conflict-affected areas, those who do face the greatest risk of falling victim to serious violence since systematic records began. This report delves into the differences between boys’ and girls’ experiences through a gendered analysis of the six grave violations of children in conflict: (1) Killing and maiming of children, (2) Recruitment and use of children…
The main finding of this report from Disability Rights International (DRI) is that Bulgaria has replaced a system of large, old orphanages with newer, smaller buildings that are still operating as institutions. While the new facilities are officially referred to as “family-like” residences or “small group homes,” DRI’s investigation finds that they are neither small nor are they family homes. In fact, they are mostly 14 bed facilities. Many group homes are run by one local authority, leaving a few administrators responsible for dozens of children. In one case, DRI investigators observed…
In its resolution 69/157 of 18 December 2014, the General Assembly invited the Secretary-General to commission an in-depth study on children deprived of liberty.
Fundamor, a renowned NGO that specialised in providing services for HIV-positive children, decided to try to close its institution and move children to family-based care. The institution had been established at a time when state support for HIV-positive people was in its infancy. Insufficient access to adequate health care, coupled with poverty, led parents of HIV-positive children to bring them to the Fundamor institution. Over time, the leadership of Fundamor noticed that whilst children received good health care, nutrition and education, they were not developing as they would in a family…
