“The Global Social Service Workforce Alliance hosted its 3rd Annual Symposium on June 2nd, 2016. The event was held at the Birdsall House Conference Center in Washington, DC and also via live webcast. Just over 300 participants from 25 countries across NGOs, government, academia, donors and others joined the discussion in the room or online about ways of strengthening the social workforce to better support vulnerable families and children. The symposium enabled the exchange of information between members of the Alliance and other experts across countries and regions.”

As part of the work of the BCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Initiative, the National Commission for Children in partnership with BCN, and Save the Children convened a national consultative workshop in Kigali, Rwanda on 26 and 27 November 2014. The workshop sought to jointly identify knowledge, awareness and technical gaps which may be hindering children’s care reform and to identify national priorities for action. Following a participatory process with delegates and the organizing committee, the Conference Declarations and Recommendations set forth collective priorities and commitments for: improving knowledge, skills, and capacity for supporting family based care; enhancing the legislative and policy environment for children in need of care; and strengthening coordination, participation and partnerships across the continent to promote better care and reduce the use of institutions.
This is a report from a two-day seminar on family foster care in India. Experts from various fields including NGOs, medical, legal, and government organizations, as well as participants from a number of Indian States shared their valuable experiences on how to provide effective family foster care programs for children.

A recent study estimated that 34.7 million children are orphans in 34 countries with high rates of HIV/AIDS. In Uganda, orphans constitute 20 percent of children younger than 15, in Malawi, 16 percent. Even if HIV infection rates level off now, the number of orphans in these countries will reach 44.2 million by 2010 and continue to climb until 2030.
The relentless growth in the size of the population of orphans and vulnerable children has precipitated a multifaceted care burden that too will grow for the next 20 years. Children whose parents die work more, attend school less, fall sick…
