Abstract
In South African schools, the umbrella term orphans and vulnerable children includes child-headed households (CHHs). In the light of trauma exposure of learners from CHHs due to their plight, there is a need to investigate how they are supported. This research investigated the psychosocial-support provision for learners from CHHs in five public high schools in South Africa. This was a qualitative study using a phenomenological design. A stratified sampling method was used to gather data from principals, co-ordinators of health programmes and teachers with the highest number of…
This chapter from Social Work Practice in Africa: Indigenous and Innovative Approaches showcases examples of home-grown indigenous and innovative models of social work practice in Uganda, including local models for addressing the HIV/AIDS orphan crisis in Rakai district. "The documentation of these local models thus sets in motion the conditions necessary to achieve the indigenisation of the social work curriculum, that is, social workers having a clear understanding of the…
UNICEF Cambodia’s Child Protection Programme 2016-2018 aimed to achieve the outcome that “by 2018, girls and boys vulnerable to and exposed to violence and those separated from their family, or at risk of separation, are increasingly protected by the institutional and legislative frameworks, quality services, and a supportive community environment.” The Programme has taken a system-strengthening approach at the levels of national and sub-national institutions; service providers; and children, families and communities.
Further, the objective of the evaluation was to provide evidence that…
This brief begins to address knowledge gaps of best practices for housing young adults in extended care, the housing options currently available to those young adults, and how those options vary across and within states in the US. It is based on information gathered from a purposive sample of officials from public child welfare agencies in states that have extended federally funded foster care to age 21 and from a group of stakeholders who attended a convening on the topic. After describing the methodology, this paper summarizes what was learned and offers suggestions for future research…

CARE Rwanda’s Nkundabana (Kinyarwanda for “I love children,”) approach provides a community-based solution to the overwhelming problem of child-headed households (CHHs) and households in which adults are unable to provide adequate care for children. Challenged by the impact of civil war, genocide and HIV/AIDS, Rwanda is confronted with one of the highest percentages of orphans in the world. Communities already overburdened by social fragmentation, loss of labor from the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and crippling poverty are unprepared to care for the children left behind. Even the…
Family Care First (FCF) is a USAID supported project with the goal of making lasting improvements in the well-being of Cambodia’s children. FCF, led by Save the Children, assists children outside of family care or those at risk of losing family care. It seeks to prevent unnecessary separation of children from their families and enable children to be placed in appropriate family care.
FCF supported the study and documentation of existing reintegration and alternative family care services provided by seven implementing partners in Cambodia. These services included: family reintegration…
Abstract
The phenomenon, Child Headed Households (CHHs), has become a major feature of the social landscape of different African countries. In South Africa, the centuries of racial segregation and social dislocations, coupled with post-apartheid policy ‘false-starts’, have worsened this phenomenon. This article specifically aims at assessing the impact of official intervention programmes in managing child vulnerability and CHHs in South Africa. It further examines the livelihood strategies employed by children living in CHHs and how government interventions have impacted on CHHs. The study…
This study sought to inform improvements in service delivery of Retrak’s Independent Living programme by listening to and documenting the voices of participants. The interviewees were asked for feedback on the support they received and their ideas for improvement and aspirations. The ideas and experiences of these young people highlighted the importance of supportive relationships, gaining skills and finding employment, as well as feeling included and accepted by their communities. The stories they shared have provided Retrak with valuable insights into how to better support our…
This important study on foster care practices in India by BOSCO, a Bangalore based organization promoting a non-institutional model of child care and rehabilitation, provides important insight into the history, approaches, challenges and opportunities facing the development of foster care services in the country. It highlights that foster care has a long history in India spanning across five decades, yet despite this there was very little data available about the foster care organizations providing such services and the various models of foster care they practice. This study sought to remedy…
The manual, What Works in Tackling Child Abuse and Neglect?, is the main outcome of the European Commission Daphne III programme, involving regional exchanges and research to bring together knowledge on what works in tackling child abuse. Five country reports (Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden, and the Netherlands) were developed reviewing research findings and a comprehensive report compiled about strategies, measurements, and management of tackling the whole range of child abuse and neglect, from prevention to treatment. A study compiling practice-based knowledge on tackling…
