How do young people transitioning from care plan their future lives? Planning is usually thought of as requiring clear goals and ‘future orientation’, but how might planning be regarded by young people whose wishes, hopes and plans have been repeatedly dashed? In this book Peter Appleton builds on research interviews with care-experienced young adults, and on cross-disciplinary theories of planning and of emotions, to develop a creative and non-dogmatic three-aspects model of planning for young people leaving care.

Introduction:
The Orphans and Vulnerable Children's (OVC) crisis has raised the need for alternative solutions to OVC's problems. These new alternatives gave prominence to the growth of community-based organizations (CBOs) and their interventions. This handbook is a summarized, user-friendly version of the operating procedures for alternative family- and community-based care options. It provides an overview of each type of care, key considerations, and the process followed for placement. The handbook aims to provide an easy and quick reference to critical information and “how to” about alternative family- and community-based care placements.
The handbook should not be considered a replacement for the detailed Alternative Family- and Community-based Care Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); rather, it is recommended that the full…

Long-lasting, supportive relationships (also called “enduring relationships”) are important for youths’ transition to adulthood, but these relationships are often ruptured for young people in foster care. The authors investigate how common enduring relationships are among youth making the transition out of care and whether having an enduring relationship improves their outcomes in early adulthood. The study's sample includes 608 youths in California foster care participating in the longitudinal CalYOUTH Study.
The authors found that 48 percent of youth have an enduring…
